With the recent conviction of Jay Cohen, the Paradise Casino thing and recent raids by the feds anyone who answers here needs their head examined. I guess that includes me.

        Guys, guys, guys.

Do you really think Big Brother would represent themselves by employing the antics of SMARTPLAYER whose detective work makes Inspector Closseau look like a genius?

I would think anyone from the gov't seeking incriminating info on off-shore activites certainly does not have to come to this forum to get it, much less by advertising for charter members to stupidom. I'm sure they peruse and even post regularly on this forum as as a method of staying abreast of the general happenings, but nothing earth-shaking comes from this forum. What??----occasional tales of rogue off-shores and people getting stiffed ? They've got more info and testimonials on that than a hundred BW's could provide.

The government knows more about off-shore than the offshores know about themselves, and I'm sure know all the major players and agents by their electronic surveilance and computer hacking abilities. Let's remember------they can drop a man on the moon and place him next to the very crater their aiming at. Getting "secret" off-shore info would be a walk in the park. As far as working off shore? Guaranteed the gov't has intelligence working in off-shores right now.
Give yourselves credit for knowing the booking business, but lets not delude ourselves into thinking that the government can't obtain access to anything they really want off-shore or otherwise.

Aside from that? I be needin a locksmith tonite.......Dot

They did not do such a good job with Mars.

The government is only as good as the people working for it. Most talent goes elsewhere.

            Ham hock

If you wish to split hairs thats fine.

However-----infiltrating and gathering off-shore info still easier task than landing on moon.

If you want to critique the space program thats fine, but we're talking about something different here.

                Dot Mix,

Normally I think you make excellent posts on this forum, but this time I think you are slightly off base. Once upon a time, I had the misfortune of wroking on Capitol Hill for a prominent U.S. Congressman and I can tell you from my experience that our government functions in a bizarre mix of brilliance, naivete and frightening ignorance. You have to understand that most of the people in the U.S. Attorney's Office, Justice Department, etc...are very limited in the scope of their intellect. Most of them have I.Q.'s, Ivy League degrees, impressive law school resumes and all of these things make them believe that they are "smarter than your average bear!" But you have to realize that with very rare exception, THESE PEOPLE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO STREET SMARTS!!! I know from hanging out with them when I was at Princeton and when I was in law school with them, they are alternately part genuis/ part moron! Most of them could barely grasp the concept of vig let alone understand the intricacy of a full bookmaking operation. The reason the Feds nailed Jay Cohen and the others is because Jay (got I admire his courage) actually had the guts to seek publicity for his venture in "legitimate" circles. If the Feds are as smart as you say, why haven't they "rained down" with a host of new indictments??? All you had there was one nightmarish U.S. Attorney (Mary Jo White) who was looking for some publicity regardless of the merits of their charges against Jay. They then "fixed" the trial in a fashion that would have made the 1919 White Sox proud! They don't care if they lose on appeal, because they've already got the publicity they sought. I'm not saying the government isn't capable of pulling off the claims you make, but is extremely, extremely unlikely given the people who would be working on a case like this. When it comes to U.S. Attonrey and Justice Department types, you have to remember that for every Rudy Guiliani (street smart New Yorker) there are 100 J*rk-off intellectuals!!!

I have to agree with MarkDel. Having too much experience with being chased by these guys and spending much too much time being held against my will I can tell you first hand these guys are super smart with very little common sense. Smartplayer has access to some privy info that not many people know, sorry I can't elaborate, but he has posted some things that not many people could know. My feeling is he is a fed. and maybe they are getting ready to thrash a few more offshores. This guy is much to brazen to be just a common everyday idiot. If you notice he seems to have disappeared into the woodwork again like the ****roach I believe he is.

As one of the individuals charged along w/ Jay back in 3/98- I would agree that "smartplayer" smells like an agent. The US attorney's office certainly did not use any creative techniques in their original investigation. They lied and misrepresented themselves in amateur ways such as posing as journalists from major publications to gather info etc.. Call claiming to want to post up $20k to wager on the Super Bowl and wanting to speak w/owner or person in charge. Also demanding a bank wire (which we accomodated as a special request)(later used to further incorporate the wire act) instead of a normal withdrawl procedure of Fed Ex bank check. Now that everyone is aware of the premium of confidentiality when operating offshore they have expanded their investigative techniques to posing on this board- which I am sure they have monitored since day 1. Send my regards to Mary Joe "smartplayer". Good Luck Jay! Enough lives have already been damaged for the advancement of Mary Joe White.

Thanks for the imput Mark Dell and of course, the DEVIL.

Obviously you men speak with a lot more knowledge than I do. I've never had my door busted down except when I locked my husband out of the house, so obviously I'm not talking with your experiences.

Maybe MY CONCEPT of where "law enforcement" in this high-tech era is at and what it ACTUALLY is are two different things. Maybe I've watched too many DISCOVERY CHANNEL and A&E police programs and read too many science and computer sections in my Sunday paper for too long, and that may just be the case. Along the way though, I've noticed some other things.

In my 25 years as a sports investor and business person I came to know quite a few "sharp" and "connected" people and most of them had very little respect for the proficiency or people connected with the the law. Some of them openly flaunted it. I also "knew a lot of people" who "knew a lot of people". It also "dawned" on me quite a while ago, that I've known a lot more people with "street smarts" doing time than FBI agents or other law enforcement people, and maybe this is why I'm giving them more credit for smarts than perhaps I should.

I'm here mainly as a recreational gambler looking to see our constitutional rights upheld and enjoying the banter and info of Bettors World's excellent forum.. I'm not a gang moll, I'm a respected member of the community with grandchildren. I just prefer reading "Sportsform" to the "Ladies Home Journal". I enjoy this forum and I comment only through my eyes. I say only what I think or observe through my eyes. Everything I say is my own observation and opinion and maybe sometimes I'm way off base. I thank you gentlemen for offering me your perspective on this topic, and your opinion certainly has my respect.

                      Always listenin......Dot

                          Dot,

Your last post is a good example of why I almost always enjoy your posts. I'm glad you didn't take what I said in the wrong way, because I assure you it was completely constructive.

You made an excellent point when you stated that so many more "street smart" types end up in jail. Obviously part of this has to do with the risky nature inherent in "street" activity, but I think it goes a lot deeper than that and you may in fact be onto something here. As somebody who has always "had a foot in both worlds" as the expression goes, I can tell you that the "street smart" types end up in trouble because most of them have strong libertarian beliefs that lead to non-conformist lifestyles. The "street smart" guy tends to HATE HYPOCRISY and as a result they have absolutely no respect for government. The "squares" believe in the system and in a way are more street smart than the street smart people when it comes to manipulating the system to their own ends. Look at J*rk-offs like Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, etc...and see how they "use" the system to get away with all sorts of crimes. People like this couldn't feed themselves "out on the street" yet they are bigger criminals than the biggest bookmaker. I saw this all the time when I worked on Capitol Hill. These guys would break laws (bribery, extortion, soliciting prostitutes, etc...) all day long and get away with it because they covered for each other and understood how to work the system, yet I had a bad reputation among other staffers because I ran the office football and basketball pools that all these hypocrites participated in.

Sorry guys, I'm on a bit of rant here, time to bore you no further...

I understand and agree completely where you are coming from regarding your above post. Some of the slickest "smarts" are owned ironically by the very con artists and manipulators our votes and tax dollars keep in office.

Like you say----makes you wonder whose got the real "street smarts".
