  • INTERTOPS.COM ANNOUNCES ODDS ON GIAMBI & BONDS SWEEPSTAKES

Yankees Favored To Sign Giambi; Bonds Likely To Stay In San Francisco

St. John’s, Antigua (November 27, 2001)—Major League Baseball’s second season, the period of free agency that begins following the World Series, is busier than ever with some of the league’s premiere players having filed for free agency. Leading this year’s class of free agents are Jason Giambi, one of the best hitters in the game and last year’s American League MVP, and Barry Bonds, the new single-season home run champ and National League MVP. Realizing that Giambi and Bonds are the two hottest free agents in the majors, Intertops.com today becomes the first established bookmaker to release odds on what teams will sign Giambi and Bonds before the 2002 season opens.

The Internet’s first and largest sports betting site, Intertops.com has given the New York Yankees top odds to win the Giambi sweepstakes and sign the perennial All-Star, currently listed at 4/5 odds (i.e., win $4 for every $5 bet). While the Yankees are the favorite to sign Giambi, the St. Louis Cardinals (6/5), Oakland Athletics (2/1) and New York Mets (12/1) also appear prepared to make a run at signing the slugging first baseman.

“George Steinbrenner has apparently told his executive team to apply the full-court press and get Giambi in pinstripes,” said Simon Noble, CEO and co-founder of Intertops.com. “With money being no object in New York, it appears Giambi may jump at the chance to play for a team that has made it to the World Series in each of the past four seasons.”

The courtship of Barry Bonds appears to be a tighter race with more teams appearing to have interest in the new home run king. Currently, the San Francisco Giants are favored to re-sign the 37-year-old Bonds at 6/5 odds. However, the New York Mets (3/2), Seattle Mariners (5/2), New York Yankees (4/1), Atlanta Braves (5/1) and Los Angeles Dodgers (10/1) all have needs for offensive production and have the means to pursue the left fielder who will reportedly demand $20 million per year.

“Bonds may be aging, but he still put together one of the best seasons in baseball history and appears to have the longevity to continue to produce at a high level,” continued Noble. “Although, he will most likely be offered larger contracts from other teams, Bonds will likely re-sign with the Giants once he realizes his heart is in San Francisco.”

All other teams not mentioned have been included in ‘the Field’ currently listed at 10/1 for signing Giambi and 12/1 for signing Bonds. Odds listed are subject to change.
