The Miami Dolphins were entering a rebuilding phase heading into last season as they were under the leadership of a new head coach in former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as well as a rookie signal caller in quarterback in Ryan Tannehill out of Texas A&M. Even though expectations for the Dolphins were very much up in the air, they actually got off to an above average start, going 4-3 both straight-up and against the spread. However, they quickly faltered, going 3-6 down the stretch (4-5 ATS) to finish 7-9 overall and second in the AFC East.

Tannehill had a very sub-par first year filled with many ups and downs for Miami, throwing for 3,294 yards but recording more interceptions (13) than touchdowns (12). Running back Reggie Bush was finally able to stay healthy for an entire season, and it really showed as he had one of the best statistical seasons of his career, totaling 1,278 yards of total offense and eight TDs. Wide receiver Brian Hartline also enjoyed a career year, hauling in 74 receptions for 1,083 yards and one touchdown. Linebacker Cameron Wake had a monster year as well and was easily the best defensive player for the Dolphins, recording 15 sacks to help them rank seventh in the league in points allowed at 19.8 per Game.
Miami has had a busy offseason thus far, making some real nice acquisitions, but the team also suffered some key losses. The biggest acquisition was speedy Pro Bowl WR Mike Wallace, who signed a five-year deal worth $60 million. The Dolphins added up-and-coming WR Brandon Gibson in free ageNCy as well along with tight end Dustin Keller, linebacker Dannell Elerbe and offensive tackle Tyson Clabo. However, they also lost one of their biggest playmakers in Bush, who decided to leave Miami and take his talents to the Detroit Lions. Others who left the team via free ageNCy were OT Jake Long, TE Anthony Fasano and LB Karlos Dansby. In addition, Miami is expecting an immediate impact from athletic and versatile LB Dion Jordan, who was selected out of the University of Oregon with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft.
The oddsmakers at 5Dimes have the Dolphins at O/U 8 wins for this season. Tannehill will continue to get better and GAin more experieNCe, but many bettors are still not sold on him turning into a solid QB in this league. While Miami did get younger and faster on both sides of the ball, many of the team’s additions caNCel out with the players lost this offseason. The Dolphins still look to be a year or two away from taking that next big step and becoming a playoff contender. Until then, they are a .500 team at best, which would be right on the number.
