Odds and Schedule

LSU has some major holes to fill if they are to get to 10 wins for the fifth straight season. While they did get to 10 wins last year, finishing third in the SEC West isn’t what Les Miles is looking for and they could be headed for more of the same this year.

Sportsbook.ag lists LSU at odds of 23 to 1 to win the National Title which places them at 9th in the nation, according to the odds. There may be some value in taking a shot with LSU at those odds as the Tigers always seem to be in the hunt, year after year.

With previous teams, the offense was the biggest question, but this year even more so with Zach Mettenberger gone under center along with the top two running backs and wide receivers. The QB battle will fall to sophomore Anthony Jennings and true freshman Brandon Harris. Both are mobile-heavy QBs that aren’t the greatest accuracy wise. Throw that in with an inexperienced receiving core and the passing Game has a ways to go. Travin Dural is their leading WR from a year ago and he finished with seven receptions for 145 yards. Leonard Fournette and Terrence Magee will share time at tailback. Magee tallied 86 carries for 626 yards last year.

While the skill positions are filled with new and inexperienced players, the offensive line is not and could be one of the best in the Conference led by Four returnees. The Tigers will likely resort to a ground-and-pound type of Game without a proven passing Game.

The defense is another story returning seven starters and should be one of the top units once again despite struggling at times last year. LSU is highlighted by its depth, but defensive ends Danielle Hunter and Jermauria Rasco are the two players to watch out for. Combined with a solid secondary, they can run this defense. However, the linebacker spot isn’t set in stone and may be a spot of question for the Tigers.

LSU will get a good test in its first Game against Wisconsin, but it is a winnable Game, especially at a neutral site. If they can get by that Game, the Tigers will be looking at a 5-0 record ahead of two straight road Games at Auburn and Florida. Both look hard on the Schedule, but again, both are winnable. They get Alabama at home this year and it could end up being the decider for the SEC West title, depending on what Auburn does. Of course, the Tigers still have to close out the season at Texas A&M.

Ten wins is a possibility for this team, but it’s nothing you’d want to put a lot of money on. LSU’s offense is an enormous question mark and their defense can only win them so many Games. Look for eight wins at the minimum with potential for more if one of the young quarterbacks can find a groove and the running Game takes off.
