AUBURN VS LA MONROE

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK ONE

Aside from Our Key Releases this year, Our staff will also take a look at other key College Football and NFL matchups on a weekly basis. Remember, Our Key Releases are a group effort. These additional write ups are staff members individual opinions.

Auburn -26.5 over Louisiana-Monroe, 7:00 pm EDT, Saturday August 30, 2008…This is one of the first Games I circled as soon as lines came out as added Games for a couple reasons. One, I think we get some added value because everyone is remembering how Monroe went to Bama on November 17th last year and came out with a win. Two, Auburn brought in a new offensive coordinator, Tony Franklin who is adding a spread offense that is sure to shake some points out of a sometimes quiet Auburn offense. Franklin came in for the bowl Game against Clemson last year and reeled off a 23-20 win to a good Clemson buNCh. If he can do that in one Game, I am excited to see what he can do with a whole summer of practice under his and the offenses’ belt Auburn returns 15 starters iNCluding the whole offensive line. The QB situation has not been decided as of writing this but reports say that both Soph. QB Kodi Burns and JC transfer Chris Todd will get to play. Auburn has a group of running backs led by Ben Tate who rushed for 903 yards and 8 TDs last year while Brad Lester went for 530 and 3 tds. Auburn’s defense has 7 guys coming back and a new defensive coordinator in Paul Rhoads as Will MUSChamp left for Texas. Troublesome Tray Blackmon returns healthy and hopefully suspension-free to aNChor the Defense-He had 45 tackles but missed 3 Games and played on a bad knee all year.

Overall, UL-Monroe just does not have the talent to keep up with a team like Auburn on its home field. Monroe brings back 14 starters iNCluding their QB, Kinsmon LANCaster, who is a senior this year. The RB position is young with first year starter Frank Goodin, a sophomore. The offensive line has experieNCe and depth but still think they will be too slow for the quick Auburn D-Line. I see the Warhawks being shut-out most of the Game on offense with possibly a late Scoreor FG. On defense, they bring back a lot of bodies, but nothing of quality. Their secondary GAve up 260 YPG passing last year, ranking last in the Sun belt and 101st in the nation. This is making new OC, Franklin, lick his chops to exploit that glaring weakness for some big-time scoring. Monroe got beat handily by Clemson and Texas A&M to start the year last year. I see more of the same as they just cannot compete with the big dogs in their league such as Troy, and they certainly cannot hang with an energized Auburn team on opening night.

Auburn has a chance to win the SEC west this year and I see this being a statement Game right out of the GAte at a Loud, drunken, night Game in Auburn, Alabama. Plus a little added bonus to route Monroe, to show Alabama Crimson Tide fans how pathetic it was to lose the them last year. My capping is not really based too much on trends or stats right off the bat in the early part of year or really ever for that matter, but more on gut feeling and interpreting info that I read. In the early part of the year, after reading and studying up on a few teams, I try to find a soft spot in the books pocket. Generally I do not like to lay this many point except for early in the season when an odds maker may not have a handle on teams. I think this is the spot where we see a blow-out from the start. I left a few blow-outs off my card in weeks 1 and 2 in the past and I do not want to make that same mistake here. Thanks for reading and let’s cash this ticket! Cheers to a profitable college football season to all! LAy the 26.5 with Auburn….Auburn 42-10 over LA-Monroe
