2013 Preakness Stakes Picks

Including Exacta and Trifecta Boxes

5/18/13

As we get ready to offer Our official picks for the 2013 Preakness Stakes, let us remind Our readers how we approach this race and what Our objective is. Plain and simple, Our objective is to make a score. To handicap the field and hopefully find some horses at some nice prices that  have at least an outside shot to win and a good chance to hit the board. We’ll use 5 or 6 of those in an exacta box and hope the higher priced entries come in for us.

In a race like the Kentucky Derby, with 20 horses running, you have the luxury of tossing some of the highly touted favorites, which rarely win that race. However, with the Preakness Stakes, you don’t have that luxury. The Preakness features just 11 entries, with a huge drop off in class once you get by the first 5 or 6 contenders. It really becomes a 6 or 7 horse race, in which case, you really need to include the hot shots.

So, in looking for horses to use in Our exacta box, we’ll no doubt include Derby winner Orb. Of course, that brings up the million dollar question. Did Orb, and for that matter, other Derby horses, leave it all on the track last time out? Will the short two week turn around time simply be too much for these horses to overcome?

The huge Derby field with so many good horses at juicy prices allows us to include quite a few horses in Our exacta box. Not so with the Preakness. Fewer entries and fewer juicy prices. Below we’ll list Our top 5 picks in order of preference below. Our official pick to win the 2013 Preakness Stakes will be posted as we get closer to the race.

We’ll also post Our exacta and Trifecta picks for the Preakness as we get closer to the event, so be sure to check back right here on this page for that.

There are many ways in which you can get all of them involved in your action, such as putting one on top of the rest in both your exacta and Trifecta Boxes. Remember also to check 5 Dimes Racebook on race day for their wide selection of props and head to head matchups.
