NFL Season Kicked Off with a Steeler's Cover

Thursday even, bettors took in this year's first NFL game of the season. The defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers entered the contest as a slight favorite and they did not disappoint their investors with a 28-17 cover win.

According to BetRoyal.com, about 60% of the betting action was for the Miami Dolphins to win against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

BetRoyal has also seen a significant 30% increase in sign ups and wagering on the first day of the season. Players have commented on the new site and customer service has been highly rated.

Steelers' tight end Heath Miller ran down the sideline for an 87-yard TD pass play midway through the fourth quarter, back up QB Charlie Batch's third scoring pass of the game, to lock down the victory. It was Batch's first three-TD game since November 18, 2001, with Detroit. Batch was 15-for-25 for 209 yards.

Miami, down 21-17 at the time, had a chance to come back. But new QB Daunte Culpepper was intercepted on consecutive series, with linebacker Joey Porter scoring on a 42-yard return with about three minutes left. Porter was so excited, he ran to the sideline and kissed coach Bill Cowher on the cheek -- the Steelers' first known sideline smooch since Cowher planted one on Kordell Stewart during a 1997 comeback victory in Baltimore.

The Dolphins, trying to build off the momentum of their six consecutive victories to end last season, never led until Ronnie Brown scored on a 5-yard run to make it 17-14 in the third quarter. Marty Booker, sidelined with what appeared to be a concussion in the first half, came back to make a 50-yard catch of Culpepper's pass, aided by safety Tyrone Carter's slip, to set up the score.

Culpepper was mostly effective in his first start for the Dolphins, until his late-game mistakes. He also was intercepted by Troy Polamalu immediately after Miller's catch put the Steelers up. Culpepper finished 18-for-37 for 262 yards.

For the first 2 1/2 quarters, the Steelers looked much like they did in the Super Bowl seven months ago -- without Ben Roethlisberger, of course. The quarterback made an unexpectedly fast recovery from a June motorcycle crash, only to need an emergency appendectomy on Sunday that kept him out of his fifth game in two seasons.

Just like in that 21-10 win over Seattle in the Super Bowl, there was a Hines Ward touchdown catch, a long Parker run and a favorable call from an official, helping the Steelers go up 14-7.

Ward, who sat out the preseason with a sore hamstring, caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Batch late in the first half. Parker used his speed to get loose on a 32-yard run to the Dolphins 35, and cornerback Andre Goodman drew a 23-yard pass interference call on Cedrick Wilson. Goodman started because of Travis Daniels' ankle injury.

Batch, making his first season-opening start since 2001 with Detroit, looked rusty for two drives, only to settle in and throw a 27-yard scoring pass to Nate Washington to finish off a 75-yard drive early in the second period. It was the first regular-season catch for Washington, a 2005 free agent from Tiffin University whose only other career reception came in the AFC title game.
    Notes
Porter's interception was the ninth of his career and first for a TD. The Steelers have won nine in a row, five in the regular season. Miami was denied its first seven-game winning streak since 1985. Ward has caught a pass in 120 consecutive games. The Steelers out rushed Miami 143-38. Pittsburgh has allowed only one 100-yard rusher since the 2004 season. Batch is 3-0 as a replacement starter the last two seasons.
    The Big One in Texas

College fans will be getting their football wagering needs filled with a huge game in Texas. Despite being very early in the year, there's national championship implications on the line, as No. 1 Ohio State takes on No. 2 Texas in Austin. A year after this contest propelled the Longhorns to the title and cost the Buckeyes a shot at one, championship hopes for both teams will be soaring on Saturday.

This will be the first time in a decade the nation's top-ranked teams in the AP rankings meet. In 1996, No. 2 Florida State downed top-ranked Florida 24-21. However, the Gators got a rematch in the Sugar Bowl and got redemption while claiming the national championship.

Texas was ranked second going into Ohio Stadium last year, as QB Vince Young hooked up for 24 yards with Limas Sweed late in the game to beat the fourth-ranked Buckeyes 25-22. The Longhorns went on to a perfect season
(11-2 ATS) and the national title while Ohio State finished 10-2 SU & 9-3 ATS.

Coming into this huge matchup Ohio State has the more experienced QB, with Young now playing on Sundays while the Buckeyes still have Troy Smith under center.

Freshman QB Colt McCoy will be playing just the second game of his collegiate career for Texas. He did well last week, going 12-of-19 for 178 yards with three TDs in a 56-7 romp and cover as the 41 point favorites, and it appears McCoy already may have picked his go to guy. Sweed had five catches for 111 yards and two TDs in the opener.

Last week, Buckeye fans watched Smith throw for three TDs and go 18-of-25 for 297 yards, but that came against Northern Illinois in a 35-12 cover victory. Two of his TD passes went to Ted Ginn Jr., who will create havoc against the Texas defense, as the Longhorns will not have one of its top coverage players to slow down Ginn.

Monday, Longhorns' starting CB Tarell Brown was arrested on misdemeanor drug and weapon charges, along with backup linebacker Tyrell Gatewood.
Tuesday, Texas suspended both players for this contest.

With Tarell Brown out, junior Brandon Foster or sophomore Ryan Palmer will likely draw the assignment of covering Ginn.

The Buckeyes will be the first No. 1 team to visit Austin since SMU in 1950, a game Texas won 23-20. Both squads know a loss Saturday could crush their national title dreams. Since the BCS was formed in 1998, the only time the national champion has not been unbeaten came in '03 when LSU and USC shared the title as each finished with one loss.

    Notable ATS Game Trends:

    - Buckeyes are 6-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
    - Buckeyes are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous game.

    - Longhorns are 39-12 ATS in their last 51 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
    - Longhorns are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in September.
    - Longhorns are 11-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
    - Longhorns are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games following a SU win.
    - Longhorns are 14-6-1 ATS in their last 21 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
