Football and Boxing for Veterans Day Weekend

It's Veterans Day weekend and bombs will again be flying when Evander Holyfield climbs back into the ring to do battle with fellow American Fres Oquendo. In this edition of The Royal Post we glance at this big fight as well as the NFL matchup between the Chicago Bears and New York Giants.

    Evander Holyfield on Comeback Trail

Former world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, making a comeback at age 44 with dreams of reclaiming the crown, continues his quest here on Friday against fellow American Fres Oquendo.

Holyfield, trying to become the first five-time heavyweight champion, ended a 21-month layoff last August by stopping Jeremy Bates in the second round, improving his career record to 39-8 with two drawn and 26 knockouts.

Oquendo, 26-3 with 16 knockouts, lost world title fights to Chris Byrd in 2003 and John Ruiz in 2004. The 33-year-old of Puerto Rican heritage was then idle for 22 months before winning two comeback bouts this year.

Holyfield, the only man to lose the crown four times, blamed a poor showing in a unanimous 12-round loss to Larry Donald in November of 2004 and two prior defeats on a shoulder injury that he says is now healed.

    Chicago (7-1 SU & 5-3 ATS) at NY Giants (6-2 SU & 5-3 ATS)

The New York Giants might be rolling into their NFC showdown with the Chicago Bears on a five-game winning streak, but they're not even close to being at full strength.

The injury-plagued Giants will be without a number of starters when they host the Bears on Sunday night in a matchup that could go a long way toward determining home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs.

New York can pull into a tie with Chicago for the best record in the NFC with a victory. NFC South leader New Orleans is also 6-2.

However, New York will again be missing several defensive starters, possibly including both of its Pro Bowl DEs. Michael Strahan is out with a sprained ligament in his right foot while, Osi Umenyiora may miss his third straight game due to a hip flexor.

LB Brandon Short (quad), reserve DE Justin Tuck (foot) and CB Sam Madison (hamstring) have each missed the last two games, although Madison practiced this week and could return. Linebacker LaVar Arrington is lost for the season with an Achilles' tendon injury suffered on Oct. 23 at Dallas.

New York's problems also extend to the other side of the ball. The Giants learned Wednesday that Amani Toomer -- the franchise's all-time leading receiver -- will miss the rest of the season after an MRI revealed a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament.

Chicago has serious injury problems as well, but not nearly the same volume as New York. Pro Bowl LB Brian Urlacher has a sprained big toe on his left foot -- suffered in the final minutes of last week's 31-13 loss to Miami -- and is listed as questionable. The Bears lost all seven games they played without him in 2004.

WR Bernard Berrian, who leads all Bears receivers with four TDs, suffered bruised ribs in last week's loss and is doubtful for this game.

The challenge facing Chicago's top-ranked defense will be slowing down the NFL's leading rusher, Tiki Barber, who is averaging 121 ypg during New York's winning streak. Barber carried only 17 times last week, but still ran for 115 yards and his first TD of the season.

Offensively, Bears QB Rex Grossman has committed 10 turnovers in the last three games. He was picked off three times and also lost a fumble last week, and is tied with Detroit's Jon Kitna with a NFC-high 10 interceptions on the season.

The Bears have not had much success running the football this season, as starting TB Thomas Jones has topped the 100-yard mark just twice and former first-round draft pick Cedric Benson has been used sparingly.

New York has not beaten Chicago at home SU in the regular season since 1969, losing the last four visits by the Bears. Chicago won 28-21 two years ago in the last matchup.

    Notable Game Trends:

    - Bears are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss.
    - Bears are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring less than 15 points in their previous game.
    - Bears are 12-5-2 ATS in their last 19 vs. NFC.
