LONDON — British fans are set to bet more than 100 million pounds ($150 million) on Euro 2000, making it the world's biggest single sports betting event, bookmakers Ladbrokes said on Friday.
The tournament could lure more punters than the 1998 World Cup when the British bookmaking industry took more than 80 million pounds ($120 million) in bets.
Internet betting will boost the number of fans having a flutter on the Euro 2000, a Ladbrokes spokesman said.
"Having a bet adds an extra dimension and excitement to the whole match experience," Ladbrokes e-gaming manager John O'Reilly said.
"Events like the Euro 2000 will encourage fans who maybe wouldn't have gone to the betting shop to take their first flutter online."
Netherlands are 7-2 favourites for the tournament with Ladbrokes who make Spain 5-1 joint second favourites with world champions France.
Slovenia at 125-1 and Turkey at 66-1 are the big outsiders.
