No Online Gambling in Rockies
The Colorado attorney general's office and the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission have called upon local radio operators to stop broadcasting advertisements for Internet casinos and sports books, according to the Denver Post’s Andy Vuong.
Last month the two agencies wrote to Clear Channel Communications and Jefferson Pilot Communications, warning that 'carrying advertising for illegal gambling activity falsely gives the public the impression that such sports wagering is legal.'
'We are advising the radio stations that they might have a problem because we think there is a violation,' said Ken Lane, a spokesman for the attorney general's office.
Stations could be violating Colorado consumer-protection statutes regarding deceptive trade practices by broadcasting Internet gambling ads, the letters warn.
Stations cited as having aired the ads are Clear Channel's KOA-850 AM, KTLK-760 AM and KHOW-630 AM, and Jefferson Pilot's KKFN-950.
Jefferson Pilot, operator of five Denver radio stations, responded last week by saying that it would stop broadcasting the ads. Existing contracts with Internet gambling operators will be cancelled effective from January 31.
Clear Channel have yet to respond officially to the commission and attorney general, but Lee Larsen, general manager for Clear Channel in Denver, says that Clear Channel aren’t running any internet gambling ads: “If they're illegal, we won't carry them,' Larsen said, adding that the company's attorneys are looking into the issue.”
