WASHINGTON, DC – As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “A prominent House leader opposes the current form of a bill to ban Internet gambling, and will resist efforts to advance the legislation to the House floor this year, officials said Wednesday.
”House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, R-Texas, does not favor Internet gambling, but is concerned that a prohibition proposed by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., would diminish states' rights, spokesman Jonathan Grella said.
”…DeLay met for about 30 minutes Wednesday in his office with Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., chairman of the House Gaming Caucus, and two other caucus leaders -- Reps. Frank LoBiondo, R-N.J., and Jerry Weller, R-Ill. Frank Fahrenkopf, president of the American Gaming Association, also attended.
”The purpose, Gibbons said, was to discuss strategy regarding Goodlatte's bill, which passed the House Judiciary Committee last month on an 18-12 vote. .
”…One of Goodlatte's exemptions would have allowed Internet gambling between states that choose to legalize it. The Nevada Gaming Commission is studying whether online gambling can be effectively regulated.
”Gibbons said he came away from Wednesday's meeting believing DeLay would not allow the Internet gambling ban to advance to the House floor this year for a final vote…”
