    The Heisman Watch

    1. CODY PICKETT: If you like to crunch stats, then look at what quarterback, Cody Pickett (Washington Huskies) posted last year. Pickett completed 61percent of his passes for 4,458 yards and 28 touchdowns! You must be thinking why isn't he our clear favorite to win? Simple, remember a coach by the name of Rick Neuheisel? We do, and the offense and Pickett hasn't forgotten him either. Pickett and the rest of the Huskies are going to miss this offensive genius on the sidelines. Pickett will once again be looking for his favorite target, Reggie Williams who posted these gaudy numbers last year: 94 catches for 1,454 yards and eleven touchdowns!

    2. PHILLIP RIVERS: North Carolina State finished strong last year after capping off a great season with an impressive win over the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in the New Year’s Day Bowl. Phillip’s accomplishments are evidenced by his career passing numbers of 61 touchdowns, 8,893 passing yards and over 60 percent completion ratio. No one questions this young mans ability to fling it with the best of them, as he will be playing behind a revamped OL this year. Phillip’s character and mettle will be tested early as he and the Wolfpack face the defending National Champion Ohio State Buckeye’s on September 13th in Columbus!

    3. CHRIS RIX: Florida State had one of their worst seasons in recent memory last year. Rix was one of the reasons that the Seminoles struggled last year as they awaited the maturation of the then Sophomore. He rewarded Bowden by steadily improving with each contest (when he wasn’t hurt). This year, Rix will have a talented group of WR's at his disposal, but there might be a slow start as Rix and his new receiving corps need time to jell. Still, this is the Seminoles and they will compete and they will be vying for the National Title which means voters will be paying close attention to Rix’s every pass. Also, State has a fairly easy road schedule, which should bode well for piling up numbers for the stat hungry voters.

    4. MAURICE CLARETT: Talk about a gifted athlete? All Maurice did as a freshman was to break the school record for a freshman in rushing yards with 1,237. Keep in mind, that Ohio State is one of the oldest school’s in NCAA history and this is a feat surely not to be over looked by the voters this year! It’s mind boggling to think of what Maurice can do if he can just stay healthy all year. We were at the Horseshoe last year when the Buckeyes defeated the hated Michigan Wolverines and trust us when we will tell you that this guy is a stud and a true workhorse. Maurice has more natural ability at his position then anyone in college today. If he can shake off his former demons of injury.........

    5. ELI MANNING: Now we know what the term, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree,” means. This Manning looks to be the most gifted of the bunch and that is saying a lot. This kid could actually carry the Rebels to the SEC Title by himself. The opposing defenses will have an advantage though, as they will be able to concentrate on the passing game due to the fact that the Rebels do not boast a viable running game. This kid could possibly be the first quarterback taken in next years NFL draft?

    6. ROY WILLIAMS: Williams is in a class all by himself when it comes to hauling in the pigskin and making things happen after the catch! In his junior year he compiled 1,142 yards and 12 touchdowns for a 17.8 yards per catch ratio! Talk about loyalty to your Alma Mater, the guy truly loves college football so much that he turned downed millions of dollars in the NFL 2002 draft (ignoring the Willis McGahee factor) to come back for his senior season and compete for both the National Title and the coveted Heisman Trophy award. This guy has all the tools to be one of the greats!

    7. CASEY CLAUSEN: One of the preseason favorites is senior quarterback Casey Clausen of the Tennessee Volunteers. This is also no coincidence that the Volunteers are a team we feel that could possibly be playing for a National Title. Clausen is your proto-type NFL QB with a 6'4' frame and 215 pounds and has completed 62.6 % of his passes and that with a banged up wing and a make shift receiving corps. The Vol's will be focused this year after a rash of serious injuries that depleted the team’s moral for National Title aspirations last fall. Clausen had one of the nations most talented WR's in Kelley Washington last year, but he was lost to the NFL. Regardless of who is on the receiving end, Clausen should be set for another run at the SEC Championship. The Vol’s return eight starters on offense!
