Jeff Fisher’s mouth is moving money at the sportsbooks.
Since the Tennessee Titans coach announced earlier this week that his starters are playing most, if not all, of the first half of the preseason opener with the New Orleans Saints Saturday, the team’s odds have risen to –3.
“If you look at the opening line the Titans were originally just 1-point favorites,” says Belmont.com oddsmaker Peter Childs. “(The line) was quickly steamed up after Fisher held that press conference and stated his intentions.”
According to the Tennessean, Fisher’s first-line defense, offensive linemen and receivers are all getting extended playing time versus the Saints. Running backs Chris Brown, Travis Henry and rookie LenDale White are each playing a quarter in that order.
The most inexperienced player taking the field in the first half is rookie quarterback Vince Young, who takes over for starter Billy Volek at some point before the half.
"I`m expecting Billy to do well and I`d like to try to get Vince an opportunity to play behind the starting offensive line at some point towards the middle or the end of the second quarter," notes Fisher. "Vince will play the third quarter, and then I`ll play Matt (Mauck) and hopefully Cody (Hodges) as well."
Reports from the Saints camp indicate they’re taking the more traditional approach of giving their starters very limited playing time.
The Baton Rouge Advocate reports that Drew Brees is starting at quarterback and playing the opening quarter and “perhaps a little longer”. Backup Jamie Martin takes over under center in the second while Todd Bouman takes the snaps in the third and plays out the rest of the contest.
Feature running back Deuce McAllister and starting tight end Ernie Conwell, who both underwent knee surgery last season, are being held out of the game entirely. First-round draft pick Reggie Bush is playing about one quarter and possibly a little more in what marks his unofficial NFL debut.
“The reason is I can get another seven, eight more days (of rest for McAllister and Conwell) until the Monday night game (Aug. 21 against Dallas),” Saints coach Sean Payton tells the Advocate.
