WAGERWEB.COM POSTS ODDS ON: “WILL THE CHICAGO CUBS BE SAMMY SOSA-LESS ON OPENING DAY OF THE 2005 MLB SEASON, AND, IF SO, WHAT TEAM WILL HE GO TO?”
(Zapote, Costa Rica, 14 OCTOBER 2004)-Was the $87,000 fine the Cubs levied against slugger Sammy Sosa for leaving their final regular season game early the beginning of the end of Sosa as a Cub? Only time will tell, but what is apparent is that all is not good in Wrigglyville for both Sammy and the Cubs. The Cubbies, off their Wildcard collapse at the end of the regular season, will be looking for answers and there is a good chance that Sosa will not be one of them, come opening day 2005.
According to Wagerweb.com sources, Cubs manager Dusty Baker and Sosa have not had the greatest relationship, and Baker is known to get rid of players who he doesn’t get along with, or that he feels could be a cancer to the team. There have already been teams that have expressed interest in Sosa. Both the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers have secretly been pursuing Sosa for the past season or so, and each team was targeting Opening Day 2005 as a target to have Sosa in their lineup. Another team that has made it no secret that they would love Sosa is the New York Mets, who will have a new manager and some money to spend this off-season. It might be harder for the Royals to land Sosa, due to their lack of funds, but the Rangers would not have much trouble coming up with the cash.
“Sosa leaving the last regular season game early really created some tension between Sosa and the Cubs organization,” said Wagerweb.com CEO Dave Johnson. “It would be hard to see Sosa in any other uniform than the Cubs, but, in today’s baseball world, it’s all about money, and there are several teams that would love to have him. We have already taken in a lot of wagers on the Rangers and Royals to land Sosa for the 2005 MLB season.”
Another factor in where Sosa might land if he bolts Chi-town is the Dominican factor. With Sosa hailing from the Dominican Republic, a team might try to capitalize on the Dominican fan base in markets like New York or Florida, which currently have the biggest Dominican populations outside of the Republic itself. Not that any team and its fans would not love to have Sosa, regardless of what his heritage is, but the fact that Sosa is so active in his country’s welfare could be a factor in which team trades for him or which team he would like to go to if the Cubs are no longer an option in his heart. Whether he stays or leaves, the mark that Sosa has left on Chicago and the Cubs nation will never be forgotten, which only ups the stakes for the Cubs to keep him.
