  • Training Camps are around the corner, time to get ready for the 2010-11 NFL CONTEST

    2010-11 NFL CONTEST
The NFL Game of the week contest is simple. Pick ONE PRO FOOTBALL game per week, against the spread or total. The winner is the contestant with the most wins at the end of the year.

This contest is held in our main Bookies Hell posting forum. Picks are posted in the appropriate thread each week, and standings are generally posted by Thursday morning.

This contest is not only popular to participate in, but also very popular among those looking for quality free picks. There are some great handicappers in this contest, and each week, you're getting their very best play. As such, you are strongly encouraged to get your play posted early.

Official Rules (please read closely as the rules have been modified from last year):

    1. The contest will run from Week 1 (September 9, 2010,) through Super Bowl 45 (February 6, 2011) of the NFL schedule.

    2. Your Gameday pick may include a Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday game. However, you are only allowed one pick per NFL week.

    3. Players in this contest will post one pick per week using the line listed Thursday morning at a major online sportsbook…..SIDES OR TOTALS. If more than one pick is posted by a contestant, the first pick will be used. Editing picks will not be allowed. Once your pick is posted it is official.

    4. If a game is posted as OFF when lines are posted on Thursday morning, it will remain OFF even if the line and total are subsequently posted later in the week. Posting a game that is OFF will be counted as a loss.

    5. SIDES or TOTALS!!! Picks MUST be posted prior to kickoff posting forum time (EST) on Gameday. NO EXCEPTIONS ! A pick posted after kickoff will be counted as a loss.

    6. Not posting a pick will be counted as a loss.

    7. Win (1 point), tie/push (1/2 point), and loss (0 point) will be recorded and posted generally no later than Thursday morning of the concluded week.

    8. Miss any combination of three (3) weeks of not posting a pick and you are OUT of the contest for the remainder of the season.

    9. If you come in on week #2, week #1 will be counted as a loss.

    10. In the final two weeks of the contest (Championship Sunday and the Superbowl) all contenders (who will be bolded in the standings) MUST submit their picks via email to me. I will subsequently post those picks as soon as I have received all picks from all contenders. This is to prevent all contenders from seeing their competitors picks.

    11. In the event that there is a tie for any place "in the money", the tiebreaker will be total gross yards of both the NFC and AFC teams (total gross passing + total gross rushing) in the Superbowl. The tiebreaker selections MUST be emailed to me and subsequently posted prior to kickoff of Super Bowl 45.

      Taxman:

Right on with Rule Number 3.

"3. Players in this contest will post one pick per week using the line listed Thursday morning at a major online sportsbook..."

Great that the spreads and sides will be posted on Thursday morning instead of early in the week when some games are still off the board because of injuries and other factors. I assume that this will be modifed for NFL Thursday games, e.g., Turkey Day.

"Picks MUST be posted prior to kickoff posting forum time (EST) on Gameday."

Just to clarify this, does it mean prior to kickoff time for the game you are picking which could be Thrusday, Sunday, Sunday night or Monday night, or prior to "kickoff posting forum time (EST) on Gameday" which sounds like one particular day.

I think I know but just want everyone to be clear.

I understand the reason to allow for later picks, but it does take away an important attraction to BW.com. If everyone is required to have their picks in by Noon (EST), then it will create a draw for BW.com as folks will stop by to see who picked who and have an hour to get their own plays in based on what they see posted on BW.com.

Maybe a sentence that acknowledges that folks would like to see your plays as soon as possible, so if you are locked in before Noon on Sunday, please don't wait to post.

        Great job. Thanks!

          I agree, wide.

There was too much bitching a couple of years ago.

I am strongly leaning towards having the play posted an hour before kickoff to encourage BW traffic.

The noon kickoff is great for regular Sundays, however, with 3 Thanksgiving games, and the usual BS of Thursday games for half a season then your token Saturdays at the end it gets to tough to draw the line.

I'm open for more comments, I just want this contest to run smooth and fulfill the needs of BW.

Laxsfo99, for Thanksgiving, I'll make sure the sides and totals are posted by Wednesday afternoon. Trying to leave at least 18 hours available before the first game.

Maybe if we did the Sunday Noon deadline, we could have an out for those who space out and miss it or have computer problems. You could say Sunday at Noon OR the Sunday or Monday night game if you miss the Noon deadline.

Great to see you running this again.

I plan to give this my attention this year and be in the running.

Are you going to Illinois vs Northwestern at wrigley this year? If you are let me know maybe we could go together.

I am planning on going to the Purdue Northwestern game.

Not a big fan of Wrigley.

Watch out for Boiler Basketball this year. I have very high expectations this year.

I am not in favor of the Sunday noon deadline. I think the rules are fine the way they are listed in the original post. That being said, Widestrides idea is a decent alternative.

I think the earlier the deadline the better for a couple reasons--

                        1. Allow players to browse the picks of the contest to see what they want to play for real money so that consensus picks/top capper picks can be posted as someone did last year.

                        2. Bring more traffic into BW which is the reason why these contests are even sponsored.

                        3. Avoid large line swings right before kickoff.

                        4. To say it again, get more traffic to the site so we can keep having contests.

                          How's this for negotiation?

                          5. YOUR WEEKLY PICK MUST BE POSTED 1 HOUR PRIOR TO GAME TIME!
                          NO EXCEPTIONS!
A pick posted after 60 MINUTES BEFORE kickoff will be counted as a loss.
This time deadline will be strictly enforced.

For example, 1:00 PM Eastern game time must be posted no later than Noon EDT, 4:15 Eastern game time must be posted no later than 3:15 Eastern

If a contestants wishes to use a Thursday game, their weekly selection must be submitted 1 hour prior to Thursday game time.

This rule was created to encourage contestants to post in a timely manner so that players can browse the picks of the contest to see what they want to play for real money so that consensus picks/top capper picks can be posted and alsog bring more traffic into BW.

                            Taxman:

Thanks for allowing input and for your rapid responses.

Going with the one (1) hour before kickoff is fine by me. I assume this would also apply to the NFL scheduled Sunday night and Monday night games? Yes - No.

                            Thanks.

So basically you just have to be one hour before YOUR game starts? Or the first game that day?
