WagerWeb.com POSTS ODDS ON: "WHO WILL BE THE 2004 NFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR?"
(Zapote, Costa Rica, 15 September 2004)-Defense has been the key to success of the last five Super Bowl champions, and should prove no different this NFL season. Helmets will be crashing into each other and bones will be breaking.
It seems as if defensive players just keep getting stronger and stronger and the offensive players are trying everything they can to compensate. Can you say illegal substances? Well, maybe not to that extreme, but it is becoming an issue when a defensive player is capable of ending an opposing player's season or, worse, his career. The scary thing is that we are seeing such incidents more and more.
This year's crop of possible candidates for the 2004 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award is a virtual who's who of the top defenders in the game today. Lewis, Urlacher, Taylor, Kearse, Thomas, and Strahan. This year also marks the return of an old friend, and future Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders, as he comes out of retirement to play for the Baltimore Ravens. Like they needed any more solid defenders...
"It is phenomenal to see the brute strength and physical ability of today's NFL defensive players; they truly are capable of changing a game with one hit or a forced turnover." said Dave Johnson, CEO of WagerWeb.com. "Today, more than ever, it seems that defensive players are changing games almost single-handedly. The usual suspects seem to be where the money is coming in on such as Ravens, LB Ray Lewis, Bears LB Brian Urlacher, former Redskins' and now Broncos' CB, Champ Bailey, and former Titans, and now Eagles' DE, Jevon Kearse. We have also taken a decent amount of wagers on newly un-retired Ravens' CB, Deion 'Primetime' Sanders."
As good as are many of the players listed above, this award will most likely come down to a player on a team that is playoff bound. Many feel that the AP is biased in that fashion, and only seems to vote for a player to win the award if his team is having a great season overall. That might be hard to do this year, as there will be many teams that will have good seasons, and still get shut out of the playoffs due to parity in the NFL. That will make the race for the 2004 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year that much more exciting.
