    Baseball Exuberates Life.....
    by FREAK

I looked upon tonight's all century team in utter sadness but yet undying love. Rather mixed emotions one may say. Why yes indeed it is. Let me further explain.

Looking back at the men that paved history for todays game brought utter joy, to see these men, whether they be grayed haired or hardly able to walk was one moment that will never happen again at least for another 100 years and certainly not this fine group. The sadness part comes in that I personally never saw most of these men play, and yet they mean so much to the game.

Looking at todays active players and even those that recently left the game, it was joy once again that they played a part of my life. The sadness, is a result for taking the game for granted, taking the players for granted and truly not realizing how much effect these players had on me, and will have have on people in the future, those same people will be writing, thinking, wondering like me 100 years from now.

To see Pete Rose get the ovation he received was great, it actually brought tears to this man's eyes. As I grew up with the Big Red Machine, eating, living, breathing the Reds in the 70's. Those days of Bench,Morgan, Concepcion,Seaver,Rose and company will probably never ever happen again.

The sadness of Rose's commentary was disheartning, as instead of having the public embrace him even more, he turned them away. Alas that is Rose's style. A gutty go for not style player. Charlie Hustle.

The night was more than Rose, it was Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb and 26 other greats that will live on forever in the record books and in the historians of baseball and American history.

Tonight was for the fans, for the players, for the game, for history, for life.

As baseball truly has played a great part in this writers life, time goes on and soon enough spring training will be around the corner to yet another season of

    PLAY BALL !!!!!

Ahhhh I can smell the spring fresh air.....

    Baseball exuberates life.

The all-century baseball team is a nice concept. But more exciting would be an all-century sportsbetting team. Guys like Billy Walters, who now owns something like 18 golf courses; Sam Brown, who even though he was robbed 7 times still has more money than God; Lem Banker, who if he pawned just the jewelry he wears could buy a casino; Chuck Sharp, who has retired to Thailand and whose lifestyle would make Hugh Hefner envious.

There are plenty of others, like Billy Baxter and Bob Black. And there are all kinds of successes in and out of Vegas that I don't know about, but others do.

Hey, we can even put Pete Rose on the team, and then have Jim Gray interview him about the honor.
