Basketball middling ain't what it used to be. In the 80s, a middler in Vegas could compete for numbers at the 8:00 AM Stardust Lottery, then put a few plays in at places like the Sands, Holiday Inn, and Tropicana, and be done for the morning by 10:30 AM. Once done, he could then take off til
2:30 PM, knowing that seldom would any significant line movement take place during this 4-hour period.

During this 4-hour period, most middlers would just hang out by the pool, trying to pick up ****tail waitresses or escort service broads working on their tans.

Then it would be back to the salt mines for 3 more hours, as we would jump on the moves of Billy Walters and Chuck Sharp, and then buy back the other side in our attempt to get middles.

Billy and Chuck and others of their ilk had respect for bandwagoners. Their basketball plays, almost like clockwork, would hit at approximately the same time every afternoon.
It does not surprise me that Billy Walters is now known for his philanthropy, and that Chuck Sharp, presently residing in Thailand, now meditates regularly, like a Buddhist monk in search of spiritual Nirvana. Ah, those were the good old days for middlers.

When I first started middling again this basketball season, I assumed I could just work afternoons, that the "steam moves" would not hit til after 2:30 PM. Well, I was 180% wrong. Now, much of the basketball "steam" movement takes place in the mornings, and at least one group has the audacity to put in their plays during the heart of lunch hour, between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM. Then, because there is still significant movement in the afternoon, and because one needs to buy back games that he took leads on earlier, it is imperative to also work this shift. The gist of what I'm trying to say is that middling is now a full-time job. If one is serious, he can never, for fear of missing a move, leave his Don Best screen between 7:45 AM and 5:00 PM.

Now, I can tolerate--barely--having to work mornings and mid-afternoons. But I cannot stand having to work during ordinary lunch hours, when one needsto grab a bit to eat, and run a few errands.

However, a group out of San Diego, I hear, that bets NBA totals and moves the line significantly, usually plays sometime between 11:30AM and 1:00PM. They wait til most bandwagoners go to lunch, and then put in their plays. I call this lack of respect. And now I know how Rodney Dangerfield feels.

We ordinary folks need lunch to alleviate our hunger. Not so this group out of San Diego. Because they skip this mid-day meal time to put in their plays, I have given them the moniker "The Lunch Bunch."

Now why in the world would these guys skip lunch to put in their plays? Well, I did some research, and here is the answer:

They are disciples of Roy Walford, famous M.D. and gerentology researcher at UCLA. Walford has authored two books: "Maximum
Life Span," and "The 120-year Diet." According to Walford, and based on his extensive research with rats and other mammals, the only way to significantly increase one's lifespan is through severecalorie restriction. For example, by fasting the rats three days a week and feeding them normal meals the other four, he was actually able to double their lifespans.
Walford himself now also fasts three days a week. You can take all of the anti-oxidant vitamins and supplements and spend 6 hours a day exercising, but it will not significantly increase your lifespan. Only significant and consistent under-eating, or fasting, according to Walford, will dramatically affect your life expectancy.

So these guys, "The LunchBunch," are health nuts who make the rest of us suffer. And because they'll probably live to be 120, middlers will be suffering for years and years to come. Now, to be truthful, I don't care if these guys never eat again. That is their prerogative. All I ask is that they put their plays in during normal sportsbetting hours. All I ask is for is a little respect. Is that asking for too much?

    Reno,
I can relate to what you're saying. Middling is such a grind. I was completely warn out after last Saturday's all day line movement. I don't have the luxurary of middling during the weekdays because of the business that I run but I think I would go nuts unless it was showing good profits. I am literally kicking myself because I was riding the steam thru Thanksgiving weekend and basically broke about even. I decided to strictly middle and abondon opinions and either side. As I've been middling the last week or so, these guys have been on fire, hitting I'd say around 65% winners. A few middles have landed on side #'s but in nothing in comparison to the $$'s that could have been made if I had stuck with the moves. Do you think that they'll stay hot? Or was this just a few days of luck for them? I'm debating about combination middles where I take a small opinion on the move. Any insight would be appreciated.

Reno i realize what you say is in jest, but i can't help myself, so here goes.

Here is a thought for you and your middling pals:

HANDICAP THE GAMES YOURSELF! As a handicapper i love having you middlers around, just like i love having the foolish steam followers around b/c you guys make already weak syndicate plays even weaker.

I especially love the way the followers blindly bet NBA totals steam with no appreciation for value and expected pace.

This year will probably be my best year for betting and i attribute Don Best, and yourself for the cult like following the syndicates have. Foolish people think it is easy to simply pay $500/month and then follow the line changes all the way to the bank.

This is not true, and i hate to burst the bubble of some of the "part time" followers, but the sharp money SUCKS betting basketball. In fact i wouldn't even call this money sharp at all. Granted the old school groups were quite succesful, however much of the newer groups expect to use the same tools the old guys used (computers) when it is obvious that the line makers have caught on and the playing field is now (despite what all you "net"izens may feel) severely biased in favor of LVSC.

What i find especially ironic in all of this is that the old syndicates beat the old linesmakers by having stronger numbers. Nowadays LVSC's numbers are much stronger than they were (obviously) and yet these nouveau syndicates are still trying to make a buck using computed perceptions of value.

This leaves me (and other inductive handicappers like me) at a huge advantage since my plays are derived out of perception, and other sense datum that i am able to collect (vocabulary has been selected to acheive a greater sense of irony) by actually WATHCING THE GAMES!

(most of this isn't directed at the middlers, but rather pseudo wiseguys whose only epistemic justification are the solitary "dings" which act as "channels" and guide their flawed handicapping

One final note, here in the north old man winter has forced me to plug my car in overnight, which leaves me to wonder how "hot" the steam will be come january and february, and also impels me to say a prayer each night for all of the blind followers of the screen.

If the steam stays as hot thru January I suspect that by February most of the steam followers will be retired in the sunny Carribean (having purchased the estates of numerous broke bookies).

There is a lot of two-way action now. Yesterday, for example, a number of games in the colleges--Indiana, Dayton, and Texas come to mind--went both ways.

I'm going to start playing certain steam games in the colleges as well as middling them. That is because we set up a deal to move money for a syndicate that plays the colleges. This syndicate has been hot, and we'll get the plays before they hit the Don Best screen. However, no matter how hot these plays are and no matter how many middles I hit, I am still taking off in January and February to vacation in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia.

Hey, Reno can you post the Syndicate's plays on this board or your's after you get the bets in? It would be interesting for me to follow guys who may know what they are doing. In fact, I'd love to have the plays before the line moves as my hundred bucks isn't going to move any lines, but I guess that would not be in the group's best interest.

Phaedrus, thanks for the advice regarding college hoops. But I have neither the time nor interest to handicap college baskets. If I were to handicap baskets, I'd much prefer to concentrate on the NBA, particularly totals. And I will probably do that next season.

Brett, what's interesting in this thread is the divison of opinion concerning the steam. All I know is that the steam in college hoops, in general, did not win the previous 3 years. Based on that fact, we chose to just middle the games, without keeping anything extra on the moves. However, now that we'll be getting specific steam move reputed to be strong, we will keep extra on those moves. As far as I'm concerned, unless I know who I'm following or unless my research shows--which it doesn't--that the steam in general wins in a certain sport, I would just middle. Short-term hot and cold, like you're talking about, is not particularly significant as far as I'm concerned.

                Reno,

I don't bet college basketball either, my specialty is NBA totals, although all of my CFL plays are strong, the lack of work that it takes makes it hard for me to classify them as my specialty.

I never bet NBA sides (ok rarely) but do play NBA totals and handicap the games using purely subjective methods (ie no number crunching).

Reno, i understand your dillema totally.
(no pun) I spend less time than what
you're talking about though when I'm
doing nothing but monitering the screen
I walk about 2 miles per hour on a treadmill.
Sometimes I get so tired that I have to
stop, and then its all I can do JUST to
watch the screen and keep my head up.

The other option would be to hire an
incall massage "therapist" for a few
hours a day but this would be too
                  expensive for most.

Whiteshoes, hey that's a great idea about the tread mill while your watching the screen. I've been stuck in front of this damned screen for too many hours to count all fall and it sure as hell ain't good for a persons' physical well being. maybe i'll look into a stairmaster or something.

DeacDoug, I wouldn't post the plays for two reasons: 1) They're not mine, and I wouldn't want to upset the originators. 2) I don't have time on most of them. I am almost always busy looking for numbers or putting in games. It would therefore be a costly distraction for me. In fact, I am still kicking myself for relaxing a bit around 12:00 Noon today and responding to this post. While I was doing so, I missed the Central Michigan move, and the game fell right on the number. That's part of the frustration of middling. You catch every move but one, and get great middles on them, but none fall. And then you happen to miss one move, and that is the one that falls.

Whiteshoes, believe it or not, I'm a licensed masage therapist. Just for kicks, I took the course at International Pacific School of Bodywork (IPSB) in San Diego around 7 to 8 years ago. Women love it when you give bring out the massage table and give them a massage. It is an incredible seduction tool. Also, I am working on a forthcoming "Las Vegas is not Disneyland" post. And in it, you will see me recommend that the "second worst sportsbook on the Don Best Screen" hire massage therapists for their abused phone clerks.

reno, if i could afford it i'd have a
massage a day. I think most entertainers
                        and other well-off professional people
look forward to this type of thing. Who
could argue, relaxation is a good thing.
That c.mich play today was a bad break.
I played this at 5 on the overnight and
4.5 at opening, then put up a post in the
other forum to play at 3. The close ones
are the hardest for both sides! A tie is
better than a loss is how I remember them..

Phil, i do like the treadmill. I bought this
real cheapy at wall-mart which I've beaten
to shreds but it still works! The stairmaster would be good except I enjoy
walking more than anything. I usually
just walk on the beach but the machines
work just as well during the winter. My
New Millenium resolution is to join a health club but it's twice as hard adding a commute
onto a regular exercise schedule. Maybe next
                        millenium...

Is Bob Hope the comedian still alive? Last I heard he was in his mid-to-late 90s, and attributed his longevity to daily massages.

I think Hope is alive and well (for a 90
                            something) What a life.

I read in something that wasn't there in
your post Reno. I was thinking you played
it straight and pushed, but I see now that
you missed the afternoon move on cmich and murphy's law abided by landing on the number.
                            (i detest murphy's law)

This brings me to a question: are there
still illegal bookies that don't know
a don best feed from a bird feeder? Where
would these guys exist generally speaking.
                            Bars, work environments...?
