I was just wondering how the books in Costa Rica get to watch the games. Do they have to have those old time big satellite dishes or is there another arrangment? Also, is electronic equipment, like computers and TV's more costly in CR, or about the same?

J Costa Rica has Direct TV, CABLE TV, and some books also use the big dish. They are pretty much covered. Regarding prices, electronics are more expensive there and depending on what and how many sometimes it's better to bring them from the states, other times you might as well get them there.

You can't get the american DTV in Costa Rica without a rather large dish (over 1.5 metres) the footprint of the DTV satellites is such that the beam is aimed towards North America.
Even in Mexico city you need at least a 7 foot dish to pick up Directv.

You can surely pick up the signal, but if you happen to live there then don't let DirecTV know about it. From what I know their service is limited to the US, because that's the only area they can service legally (they only have broadcast rights bought out for the US). So if you live in Mexico, the Caribbean, or anywhere else outside the US where you can still pick up the signal, make sure DirecTV never finds out about it. Or else they have a legal obligation to cut off your service. Now you wouldn't want that, would you?

Cons trust me on this, DTV altered there footprint (the geographical imprint that the satellite reaches) so that you could no longer pick it up in places outside of N.America.
Phantom, i never said that it couldn't be done, just that you needed additional equipment to actually receive the signal.
You can still pick it up in outlying places, just not with an 18" dish. You need a larger dish and a special LNB converter. As i have said even in Mexico city you need at least a 7-8ft dish.

I don't know the details, but you're right. It might be harder to pick up outside the US, but possible with a larger dish or better converter. Just as long as you live close to the US.
About the altered footprint, this would make them the first satellite company I know of to do this. It would also make the DirecTV people look like a bunch of losers. If this company is listed on the stock exchange, these people should never find a job again.
In the UK, Sky Digital makes EVERYTHING in their power to make sure their signal reaches as far as possible. They can only sell access cards in the UK, but they are aware that a lot of people buy them and take them abroad. It makes up part of their income. They have to shut you off legally if they KNOW you're using your card abroad, but they do everything in their power to make sure that as many people as possible buy the cards and take them abroad. It's all money for them, and a logical thing to do from their point of view. They wouldn't dream about policing this matter themselves, because not only is it not their job to do so, but it is against their financial interest as well.
It seems like the DirecTV people need to take a Business 101 class...

Well now I am confused because like I've said previosuly I do visit Costa Rica a lot and there is a company their that has the name DirectTV and does advertising as DirectTV. If you decide to get the DirectTV service you get a small antena that is placed in your house (18' antenna) and a decoder and that is it. If DirectTV is only for north america then why is their a company in Costa Rica called DirectTV that offers the same equipment as over here (USA).

phantom, Directv is only allowed to sell in the USA, what you are reffering to is likely Directv Galaxy Latin America. It is nothing like DTV and is mainly spanish speaking channels with some US to boot.
trust me on this, it is physically impossible to get the US DTV with an 18" dish anywhere below northern Mexico.
