  • Beards......

Out of curiousity how does one become
a beard? Do they receive a % of the wager
win or loose? Are they mainly in Vegas,
or do they exist in a greater number
    on-line? Just curious.......

In Vegas, "beard" is pretty much a synonym for "messenger bettor" or "runner." Most beards in Vegas are on salary and get their jobs by knowing the right people--usually money movers/scalper-middlers. There are still several beards that I know from the 80s currently doing the same job in various Vegas sportsbooks. Despite pressure from the Nevada Gaming Control Board, beards are still around. Apparently, they are harder to get rid of than ****roaches.

Plenty of on-line players, particularly those with the bad habit of getting booted from multiple sportsbook, employ beards. Since it doesn't take a rocket science to place a wager when given an order, being a beard is basically a function of who you know rather than what you know.

      Thanks Reno,
sounds like it would be interesting employment if the $$$ was right. Like
you said it doesn't take a rocket
scientist to place an order, and I'm a
lot harder to get rid of then a
      ****roach

sportsbank....It could be a physically dangerous occupation in LV. You must carry a BR and your movements are easy to case. Even if you leave your work in the casino cage some **** is liable to bust into your home with you inside. Its fairly good paying with the right outfit but its a deadend job. Sometimes literally. Finding a good beard or runner is one of the best tools a serious sportsbettor can have.

This also eliminates tax problems if handeled properly because you only deal in cash.(no paper trails)

Other than the NFL Getting down large amount of money on one game is getting harder and harder so having a good beard who can get down with reliable "underground bookies" is a big plus.

A good friend of mine does this for a living but he does mainly racetrack orders, but no matter the sport he always has to gurantee the money for the people he gets down for.

Example: NFL, minimum 30,000 per game at a certain number even if he cant get it he has to either buy it at a higher or lower number or book it himself.

Of course these guys are tracking current odds and know whats available by most books.

If that number jumps real fast they will know and wont hold him to a bad number.

So basicly he has to have enough big outs to handle the orders.

My guess is that there are beards in every city in Nevada that has a sportsbook that accepts reasonably sizeable bets, especially if that sportsbook is not a satellite. I can guarantee you that there are always a few of them working at any time in South Lake Tahoe. Every year or two the casinos/gaming control board kick out all the runners/beards. But, as Reno might say, like ****roaches it doesn't take more than a few days for new ones to come out of the woodwork.
