  • Poker Players Go South

The mighty Poker Players, who last baseball season terrorized Sportsbooks with their winning ways, are off to an atrocious start this season.

In fact, the National Card Players Association has warned them that unless they turn it around quickly, they will be replaced by the Gin Rummy Players, who have been lobbying for years for the right to control the big "steam" market in baseball.

I vote for the gin players, this is ugly, the only game I won today I opposed them with the lowly Twinkies against Rosado.

I wonder if any of the books that went to 20 cent lines are having second thoughts. They cited syndicates such as the "Pokers" as one of their reasons for moving to 20 cents to avoid getting hammered again as they did last year. It appears what these books accomplished was to chase both the syndicates and the smaller players to the 10 cent books.

Reno, if the trend you cite continues througout the season, it looks like the books that chose to stay with the 10 cent line will be this year's winners. Any thoughts on this?

Gentlemen please! The season is only 2 weeks old. With their deep pockets, they can withstand this mini slump and pull north in 3 to 4 days. Talent rises.

While they may have deep pockets, many of the followers do not. Those that aren't scalping, may be broke soon......may have an effect on the strength of the move, no?

Jeff, good point. And not only do the followers have shallow pockets, but they have short-term memories.

The size of the move must surely be related to the size of the following, which is very dependent on the current "hot or not" streak.

That is true, but most followers are sheep, they have no idea of how the pokers rate their games. To them it's a play period and bet the same amount on all plays regardless of the strength of the play ( because they don't know it). The Pokers can go 2-4 but win 2 strong plays and lose 4 lesser plays and break even while the follower loses 2 units.

                reno,
                a very interesting topic.
But, since I am new here, can you please explain some of the basics.
                Such as:
What is a syndicate and how it usually works?
What do you mean by "have been lobbying for years for the right to control the steam"?
Does there exist "the right" to control the steam?
If so, who is able to decide on who has "the right".
If you don't have time for this or consider those questions to be too naive, I apologize in advance.

Likely chain of events during Ps mini slump.

#1 Books wont "run" with the #s as much. Also less ghost(air) moves.

#2 Sheep temporarily regroup. They cant believe theyr losing after all their "hard work".

#3 When plays start winning the reverse occurs. Lemmings dig up fresh tagalong cash. You guys are underestimating follower volume and resources.

The Pokers are making small plays, for them. I can think of several reasons for this. Of course I'm a RW conspiracy buff...Scotty

Alec, I was just joking about the National Card Players Association and the Gin Rummy Players. The Poker Players are professional poker players who also bet huge amounts of money on baseball, and therefore, are the biggest producers of "steam"--fast, powerful line movement in a single direction.
A whole network of people move money for the Poker Players, all betting the same game at the same time at different, designated sportsbooks. Then, bandwagoners also jump on the game. The Poker Players are a true sportsbetting syndicate. The Gin Rummy players do not bet baseball and are not lobbying to control the big "steam" movement in baseball. If the Pokers quit, no one will be designated to replace them.

                          reno,
                          Thanks a lot.
The fact that I am new here together with my English which is far from perfect make it sometimes hard to distinguish a joke.

Just several more, I hope not so stupid, questions.
At how many places do Poker Players bet simultaneously?
Do they bet on so called "fixed games"? I am not sure if such thing exists in baseball at all.

In Russia national soccer and hockey championships are a disaster for sports books. Because of those fixed games and people in the know who bet on such games.
The only difference is, since books are not online ones, they bet simultaneously at several different shops of one book.

Alec, name any sportsbook and either a Poker Player money-mover or a bandwagoner will immediately be jumping on every move.
I don't believe that any of the Poker Players plays are on "fixed" games. In horse racing, plenty of races are fixed, and some guys have made a mint betting these races.
