Punter makes half million in soccer betting spree

    Reuters

Bookmakers William Hill woke up with a half a million pound hangover today after a Polish customer went on a winning spree with four huge bets. The punter put 48,000 pounds on Lazio to win Italy's Serie A and another 120,000 pounds on Galatasary to beat Arsenal in last weeks UEFA Cup Final. He then gambled 240,000 pounds on Chelsea as FA Cup Final victors. On Wednesday, he staked 340,000 pounds on Real Madrid to win the Champions League.

"This is the most astonishing sequence of football bets we've ever taken," Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe said, adding the client was sitting on a 511,000 pound balance. "The man is betting over the telephone and we hope he doesn't ring off before we get the chance to win some of it back."

W.Hill is hoping this guy turns into a square overnight. With half million pounds in Poland this guy better be careful!!!

I think that the good news here is that WH didn't back this guy off like some of these other books that 86 winners. Hats off to a solid operation.

The juice is so high in soccer they don't have to chase anyone.

Shifty, you're exactly right. WH reduced my limits by a factor of 10, down to an unusable amount. This was only after a few weeks of winnings. Just a polite way of chasing.

none of these were rocket science type selections though, so perhaps the reason they let him, apart from publicity, is that is he is, Galatasaray one was perhaps a little iffier

should be down to about 25 a game now

It looks like this was a parlay...
The initial bet of 48000 pounds on Lazio to win the Seria A championship was a fantastic risk
which I think W.Hill was smiling and saying...

"This Polak is just another dumb asssssssssss thinking that the world is flat!"

Remember... Lazio were 2 points behind Juventus in the standings. So they had to win and if by chance Juventus lost to Perugia then one part of his parley would advance. Not just that! If Juventus would have tied... then this would have forced a playoff game. William Hill were sitting pretty before this little asterisk.

            Thanxs 4 C u m i n g!!!!

Yeah.. unless the fellow from Poland also arranged the rain in the Perugia - Juventus game, his first bet was definitely a long shot.

                  Fin and OZVamp:

Really this site is fantastic resource of information on the topic of "Sportsbook gaming"!

If you add in the extra material which the Yanks
put in about Vega$ and the legal ramifications
which governments are facing with this media called "Internet" - Then the populace of BW is tops!

I think the Feds will also agree, because I'm sure there in here, taking notes looking at IPs and wondering when they can flex their muscles...

                  Keep them coming!

Well, even after he pocketed a half mil from WHill, I still won't rush to say that the guy is smarter than any of us.

Hell, I got Galatasaray to win the UEFA Cup too, at an even better odds than he got.

Of course, putting 48,000 on Lazio is another story. But I am dare to say WHill got more money from the bettors on Juventus than they needed to pay this guy.

Did you know what's the odds of Juventus to win the Serie A since the winter break?

Around a month and a half ago before the season ended, Juventus was -5000 at Itops!

                    So, go figure.

You know what, because MU didn't win the triple crown this year so WH didn't have "another amazing story" to tell that they have lost millions to those bettors that took that 30-1 long shot so there we have "the Polish wiseguy" this year.

But you will never heard that how bad were those far east bettors got their asses kicked in the second half of the season in some of those places...

The story doesn't say when he put his play on Lazio It could've been at the beginning of the season after signing Salas and co...

Then it makes more sense than the bet in the last week of the season.

                        Fedya,

No problem - if a parlay makes sense that they would take it - the big bang singles one after the other, having read about how they operate, does not - as Ray points out, nice PR piece too

and when you can bet on Ukraine soccer online, we want previews

The wager was taken before the last game.

                          AYCE:
Juventus was 1/1 to win Seria A @ the half way stage. (This for some reason in Italia is considered that if you are leading at the 1/2way stage you will win...)

Ukrainian Soccer on-line? YXA -XA -XA!!!
This would be another source for the Russian and Ukrainian mafija to try and rig games.

I was in Kyiv last October and the local bookie shop were taking bets on the local games. Limit 300 hryvna (or $60)!!!!!
I asked the local punters, "What gives???"
They said that their is enough behind the scene action that any decision could be lethal to their survival. Of course, when Dynamo Kyiv plays in Europe the locals get a better limit, butt of course the odds are far
worst than what is offered online.

So most of the punters bet European games and
the NBA where limits were close to a dime.

I know that there have been a few lurkers from the old country in here, so maybe they could give some input.

                            Fedya,

Thanks, so match rigging more lucrative than betting? Interesting

Although apart from keeping Dynamo winning all the time, wonder why, if can't bet on it anywhere?
