Boom time for gambling monopoly
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The betting pool of casino tycoon Stanley Ho Hung-sun's soccer-gambling company could grow to $1 billion from Euro 2000 matches, it was reported yesterday.
The Va Kio Pou newspaper released the estimate for SLOT, an associate company of Mr Ho's casino monopoly syndicate STDM. It holds a lotteries franchise monopoly and started accepting wagers on British, European and other international soccer championships in the late 1990s. It is understood 90 per cent of SLOT's turnover is generated by telephone and Internet betting from outside Macau, mainly from Hong Kong.
The company has a Hong Kong telephone hotline for punters to open betting accounts and a Web page to place bets. SLOT refused to comment on the newspaper report.
