  • Big soccer gamble pays off

A Northern Ireland businessman has won over £140,000 gambling on the Euro 2000 football championship.
The man, who has a business in Belfast, placed just two bets on the championship.

Ian Duff of Sean Graham Bookmakers said it was their biggest payout yet in the tournament.

He said the man had placed two bets totalling £25,000.

Speaking on Thursday, Mr Duff said: "I have never experienced anything like this in soccer.

"He had a £20,000 treble on three matches.

"He backed England to beat Germany, Spain to beat Slovenia and Spain to beat Yugoslavia.

"He also had a £5,000 double for Spain to top their group and Italy to top their group.

"What we are finding is that there is an increasing number of people who are betting on sports betting as opposed to the traditional horse racing and greyhound racing," he said.
