Forgive me for gettin in on this thread so late, but I wasn't able to read yesterday, and there are a few things in here I would like to add or respond to.
First, to thedevil,(your initial post)
My take is this. You are right you don't want to wait for the action(we are assuming syndicate action). The ideal number would be the limit of the order. i.e. the worst number these guys will play. If you know that number hang it and let everybody play, or at least until your plate is full. That way, you will minimize the wise angle and maximize the juice(because now they will play every order. I don't know if there is anyway to get data on this, but it would be the greatest test of player vs bookie to date. I further agree that the way to deal with wise guys is make them foot the bills, since basically they are just trying to be in business with you.

As to why a BM doesn't want scalpers and to end the myth that a number is hung to get buyback. No. No. No. The line is not raised to get buyback. It is raised to make less scrupulous players lay bad numbers and therefore increase house edge. Why would a book want to share their already small advantage with a scalper?
