Reality,

Have a couple of questions and comments about your statements about bookmaking.
First, let me preface by saying that I have never worked your side of the counter and there is a lot I don't know. Also, please excuse me if I misrepresent the substance of your previous posts.

1) You differentiate between Scalpers and Middlers. This seems arbitrary to me. In these situations, your numbers are tested vs other books. If your numbers are stronger, the other books money will flow to you.

In fact, one could argue a Scalper is preferred because they will never go bust. In effect, they will act as your runner with little turnover. If a middler goes on a bad enough run, you lose the middler.

2)Bad lines so everyday players can scalp

You stated that you leave up bad numbers so that your core players can make some money back. That sounds like a rationalization. If you want to take care of your core players, why not do something like SOS does, 15% of net losses back every six months. I don't think you can dictate who bets what. I would speculate that the core players take the wrong side of the bad number fairly often, just like the public line used by some shops.

3) You are only following orders - the Owner says no wiseguys or scalpers.

If your lines were sharp, you definately could profit off of the scalpers and would have use for the wiseguys. In effect, the owner is giving your openers a vote of no confidence. There are a lot of people who claim they can run a shop better than the next guy. If they have not earned the confidence to do so, it is pure BS. I am not going to argue or bet on whether you had an extra ordinary hold percentage at a no wise guy/scalper shop. I am sure you did.

Anyways, the whole point of the post is not an attempt to tear your BM record or skills down. I view the shops that kick out players in extreme contempt. Shops that use limits, if not ridiculously low, are ok. I don't think any BM that kicks out players can make the claim of being a great BM, marching orders or not. Great money maker yes, great BM no. Look forward to a response on what I have missed.

My point was not to argue about your record as a BM. That is not in dispute. The question is more directed towards the philosophy of kicking out originators and scalpers. The contention is that any BM that kicks out players is less skilled than a BM that takes on all comers. You can't be heavyweight champion unless you take on Lewis.

If I am not mistaken, you espoused a philosophy of kicking out scalpers to protect your everyday players. I don't think it is the BM's role to attempt to determine who makes what. I have no problem with BM's cutting large players special deals, I do have a problem with a BM kicking out scalpers or any other players except for cheating or situations like In the Know described where a player ties up the phone lines without making plays.

Please note this is not an attack on Reallity.
This is an attack on the philosophy of booting any type of player. If you don't espouse that philosphy, fine.

I would argue that the public is unlikely to scavenge the discrepancies. For that reason, many shops are able to deal a seperate, favorite/over inflated line. By refusing scalper/originator action, it is my opinion that you are conceding that your lines are not as sharp as the competition.
