  • If Las Vegas Sportsbooks took phone and internet wagering would you......

Let's say there was no tax implications (IRS)

Would you feel safer betting with Las Vegas based casinos (sportsbooks) or offshore.

Which would you bet with?,and if there was Las Vegas Sportsbooks operating like offshore, who would you sign up with, without hesitation.....no questions asked...

    This should be interesting....

Mirage, Ceasars Palace, Bellaggio, Venetian, etc., etc....To answer your question, no doubt I will transfer most of my accounts in Las Vegas.

Back in 1985....there was this book run in vegas run by G##y A####n. It was regulated by the precious Nevada gaming control board. The owner G.A....supposedly bet $1,000,000 on the St. Louis Cardinals in the world series at the Stardust. The line move was what you might call sort of dramatic.
St. Louis lost the series to Kansas City. Shortly thereafter there was this "robbery" at his sportsbook. Nobody in their right mind really believed there was a robbery but it had to be staged nonetheless.

Despite the "regulation" of the Nevada gaming control board everyone (and I mean everyone) that had telephone money and winning tickets got stiffed. The owner continued to drop 40 and 50 dimes a game on football that season but nobody got their money back.

story #2....in the spring of 1986 there had been a rash of robberies at Ceasars Palace in vegas. Someone was holding up the customers inside the facility and taking their money at gunpoint. Well the guards at Ceasears got lucky and cornered him in the parking lot after one of his hold-ups. It turned out to be one of the members of the Nevada gaming control board.

Now the question you're asking is would I prefer to risk my money off shore or in Nevada where the gaming control board is safeguarding it right?

I guess my thoughts on that auspice is this. That was 14-15 years ago. Offshore gambling probably wasn't an option for most people if any at all.

I don't know when offshore betting started, but it took off in the 90's.

I would think, that Nevada gaming, would want a piece of that large pie sitting out there, and would do anything they could to ensure safety. Perhaps they would insure accounts up to a certain amount. SOunds crazy sure....

However think of being able to go to Vegas to pick up your $$$ if you wanted it, can that happen offshore ???? Probably not..

Just thoughts.... Although I would like to know the outcome of the board member caught sticking people up.... prison? slap on the wrist?? any idea....?

In that scenario, I think you'd find the smaller, casual players drift toward Vegas, and places like the Mirage, Stardust and Hilton. Afterall, they have these giant corporations behind them.

It would be very difficult for the smaller and upstart offshores to compete with Vegas, but certainly the larger, well established offshores would still remain fixtures, especially with the sharp crowd.

Right now the top Vegas books don't compare with the top offshore books. Vegas would have to improve dramatically to compete.

Too much corporate BS/Hypocrisy from Vegas.
They tried to ban internet gambling.
The only reason I might prefer to play with a Vegas book is I would rather take their corrupt money than an offshore books.

I'm sorry but I can't remember what happened to him. But the whole thing was on the front page of the Las Vegas Review...made a great read.

not that it matters now.....but about a month ago when the owner of SOS had his trouble with the law....no one at first really knew what was happening. Even the guys that ran the big shops in antiqua didn't immediately know if his personal trouble was going to impact SOS and it's customers. But WWTS already had decided that none of SOS's customers were going to lose a dime. They were going to stand good for whatever was out there.

Luckily as the facts became known....no one's money was at risk and it's businss as usual at SOS.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it doesn't really matter what corporation is guaranteeing your money. It's the hell bent resolve of some people to always make things right no matter what that will always have my business.

If you didn't you didn't...but i've heard it from more than one bm that are now running major offshore books. If not i truely do apologize. What then would have made the St. Louis line go from -155 to around -250 in one day then?

I certainly hope you accept my apology, but i've even heard people say they heard G.A. make the bet. Sorry!!!! Is there any chance that G. Mayday took the bet?

IMO the government is hypocritical in so many ways regarding gambling. Based on the fact how greedy they are, it makes perfect sense to me. Make sports gambling legal to everyone. Anyone with a drivers license over 21 can came to Nevada and open accounts and call from anywhere in the world. Post up money would be 100's of millions if not billions. Anybody can deposit, only the person who opened can withdraw in person. Most people would leave their money in the account rather than travel to pick up winnings. The interest made on the money would probably cover cost of new facilities and staff. The corporations would make millions, the government could tax them and make millions. The government only objects to gambling when they are not getting their cut(lotteries, casinos all over america, racetracks) WTF is the difference between betting on a horse race or a football game?. So stop trying to stop something that is impossible to control and regulate it. IMO gambling/risking is inherent in human beings nature. Anyone who thinks any government can stop wagering on college games is brain dead. All they will do is line the outlaws pockets instead of their own.

would be a pretty scary amount of money made in the USA by the government taxwise if they legalised some sort of football pool with pointspreads involved, you would think

When Bob Stupack bet $1,000,000 at Gene Mayday's Little Ceasers on Cincy plus the points vs. SanFransisco that made front page news. If Austin wagered $1,000,000 I am sure folks in Vegas would have heard about it. I am not doubting he made a large wager but the $1,000,000 just may have gotten inflated as the story went around.

auspice...You have the right idea. He made a large wager, closer to a mil than not, and some was with us. I thought it was on the WS winner but it could have been on that game. Anyway I can still picture the horrible call at first base and the little league error. He should have won but of course we all shoulda...Scotty

bsky2...Just an idea. What if a hustler like BS (no pun intended) went to Mayday and says write the ticket Gene. No money or action involved. I'll pay the taxes on the ticket and we will get world wide publicity for both of our stores, real cheap. If they had that in mind it sure worked...Scotty
