Freak- In case you don't know the linesman makes the opening number the bookmaker manages the line from then on. Theoretically thats how it is supposed to work, so if you are referring to last nights game landing 3 and whether to move to 3 1/2 or stay 3 the bookmaker makes that decision not the linesmaker. Although in some instances the linesman and bookmaker is the same person.
This is a loaded question, but here goes............
The sharpest "linesmakers" and or "oddsmakers" are currently not working on the bookmakers side of the counter. Probably never will.
As far as who the sharpest bookmaker is, ie a guy who takes the opening numbers and goes from there, well........this is where the fun begins.
This came up at the beginning of the year. There was alot of talk about who the sharpest was, who had the biggest balls, etc. etc.
Say what you want about styles, but if you owned a book right now, at this point in the season, who would you want to be your bookmaker, a guy holding 5 or 6% or one of the sharp guys with big balls yet to have a winning week????
Steve Schillinger of WSEX, hands down. The man can calculate odds like no other. Most oddsmakers only make lines prior to the start. Steve makes them on games in progress and he is very hard to beat.
I'd like to see anyone else maintain odds on over 30 golfers for four days straight while keeping it open throughout play.
I would have to say (and for good reason) that when I am working... There's nobody can make an overall better line on all the 4 major sports day after day and use them to make money, day after day, year after year.
I also don't see how the PEOPLE that make these lines everybody is using (and all these books use just 1 linemaker) can make these lines WITHOUT booking them also DAY after DAY!
Just like I can't see how a bookie can be a bookie if he isn't making the line himself! I really don't see how bookie can be any good if he doesn't know what to expect? That logic does not make any sense!
Maybe that's the problem with the weak lines this industry is getting. The People making the lines, ARE NOT THE PEOPLE TAKING BETS ON THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff,
You are 100% correct. The best line makers DON'T work for the books. THEY DON'T HAVE TOO!
Admittedly Barts is held in high regard, but back in the sixties there was no one better than the legendary line guru Vinnie Morini who set the standard for the mob controlled stores of the east coast.
Bob Martin was the E.F.Hutton of linemaking. Savy, connections, knowledge of the games. What puts this man above the rest? He backed his opinion with cash, HIS OWN. Unfortunately , the man occasionally ran afoul with the law and did time. Lefty was no slouch. Currently Freak?---Scotty Schettler, GM LVCS.
To be a little more serious. I think the computor group has made the best line for quite some time now. To this day the lines on the college games still move towards the Numbers the computor spits out.
I think the players (and many of them) make a far better line on every sport. Let's face it.... If no one could make a better line than the bookmaker or the linesmaker, Then how could anybody win?
I think the lines the books are getting today are horrible. It is costing alot of people (the clone bookies) alot of money. But that's good..................
It is true that bookmakers don't make lines. It is unfortunate though that line makers do not beleive they should work for books. I would think it would be smarter to open a book of your own or to be paid a percentage. Kill the books and you will sooner or later have nowhere to place your bets. Make a commission and keep the books open, or you probably have something else up your sleve.
