    to Ronbets:

A similar thing happened to the late famous director John Huston. I believe it was wife three or four...anyways....he had had his fill with the Hollywood studios and didn't want to direct again. He liked the horses and was quite a good punter. He had a real hunch on a race that was to be run in Europe(can't for the life of me remember which one but I believe it was the Irish sweepstakes)....it was a longshot that promised to pay big....so he sent his wife over to Europe with every dollar he owned and the instructions on which horse to bet on.

While at the racetrack and the goings ons surrounding the race she became very impressed with what some very proper duke and dutchess had to say about the very same race. She bet everything Huston had on the dukes horse. Guess who won. That was the end of wife 3 or 4 or whatever she was. Back to the day job for John

I think Hustons' pick went off at something like 30 to one and won.

Now you guys can see why I'm a confirmed bachelor. The biggest middler in the biz, who was busted in Vegas not long ago, got ripped-off big time from his ex-wife, who worked with him.

Every time I thought that Billy was manipulating the betting lines and ruining my leads, I'd throw darts at his picture. Tommy Kramer, the former Minnesota Viking QB, hurt his career because of a drinking problem. Therefore, whenever because of excessive alcohol consumption I'd suffer a brain fart and mess up a middle or scalp, I'd throw the drink at Tommy's picture. I don't know if throwing darts or drinks is recommended by anger management counselors, but I personally found it very cathartic.

Back in Sudbury we have a "B" harness racing track where I made my first real wagers. Anyway my bouncer pal Big Al, 6ft5 /280lbs says a friend of ours has this horse (Peppernuts) running in the 3rd race. So off we go to the Downs...the first time for me in about 10 years or so. Now the driver on board is another chum of ours Tony, and this is his first drive of his career. Between having a green driver and post 8 this horse is going off at 20 to 1. The big fella says to go and lay 20 across... and after much debate I agree. When I finally get to the window I ask for the $20 across and hand her $20.00. "The wager is for $60.00" she says, and as I fish around for the other $40.00...."and there off"..... Sheepishly I head back to the grandstand with my tale of woe. Now Peppernuts is dead last so I don't feel so bad...but when there coming into the stretch the speed starts to tire "and here comes Peppernuts" screams the announcer. Of course it was Peppernuts by a nose and later on in the backstretch I was to relive the moment for the first of 1,000,000 times that the big fella has told this story. Being 5ft9 and 145lbs soaken wet.....well lets just say I know the meaning of the phrase "to grin and bear it"
