I don't believe this scenarion has been touched on.
A "junior" member visits a solid web site looking for a good book to sign up with and play.
a referral "expert" comes in and grabs him. then points him/her to stiffbook.com. EVERYBODY loses. the books who spend advertising dollars, the player gets stiffed and the whole process of getting what you pay for is lost. Thats to say, as a book you pay for being on a well known quality site with a good reputation for having solid books. thats all lost when the referral monster comes in and swoops the newbie off his feet.
like jeff said, there might be a place for referrals, but the integrity of the tracking process seems to lack true integrity.
