  • Is "steam" good for the industry?

I'm curious to get inputs on this one: is "steam" good for the sportsbook industry? Maybe the thought of the screen going black and the lines making a big move makes some bookmakers shudder. But isn't it also true that it makes for feverish action? Isn't it true that the followers, middlers, and scalpers compound the action 10-fold or more? Isn't it true that it gives the players the impression that the sports can be beat, enticing them into playing more and more often?

Perhaps the originators make money in the long run (although there is no guarantee of this either). But surely there is a much, much larger group of steam-chasers that lay inflated numbers and lose overall.

That's a loaded question........there are times when it's good for the players, and there are times when it's good for the books......guess it all depends on whether the steam is winning or losing

Things sure are boring without it though, wouldn't you say?

Jeff, "there are times it's good for the players and there are times it's good for the books". It can't get any better than that.

sportshobby, Steam is great for all involved..Scotty

Steam will always create so much more action and volume. The way steam is handled by each bookmaker will depend if they are going to make money. If you are a good bookmaker who understands the business and how much each run or point is worth, you should be able to grind out a profit every year. If you don't understand the art of moving numbers then you should give up your job.
