  • Record handle for Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE (Reuters) - The U.S. may be heading into rough economic waters but there was no sign of it in record betting on Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
National betting on the 127th Run for the Roses -- when many casual gamblers have their annual wager -- leaped nine percent from last year to an all-time high of more than $71 million.

Total takings over the whole day jumped six percent to a new high of $107 million.

Gamblers at the famous Churchill Downs course were more circumspect, with takings falling four percent even though the second biggest crowd in Derby history, 154,210 crammed into the track.

The winner of the big race, Monarchos, went off at 10.5-1, while the strong favorite, Point Given (9-5) trailed in fifth.
