Playboy launches sports wagering Web site

    Agence France-Presse

NEW YORK (May 8, 2001 5:40 p.m. EDT - Playboy Enterprises announced Tuesday it was launching a gambling site, allowing betting on various global sporting events and accepting bets in 23 currencies.

Playboy said it is "the first major global brand to launch an online gaming site."

But the statement said the site will not take bets from the United States or other jurisdictions where online gambling is illegal. Some gaming sites operate in the United States but their legality is questionable.

The site, PlayboySportsBook.com, will allow betting on "soccer, rugby, boxing, snooker, tennis, motor racing, and golf; US sports such as the ongoing NBA Playoffs, football and hockey, plus horse races and greyhound races; and special events like the upcoming British General election to the Playmate of the Year," the company said in a statement.

Visitors to the site will be greeted by "Deanna, the Playboy Betting Bunny (who) serves as the site's hostess, Playboy said. They will be able to place bets using credit or debit cards or by check.

"We're excited to bring Playboy's unique blend of sophistication, excitement and fun to online sports wagering," said Christie Hefner, Chairman of Playboy Enterprises.

"Playboy is one of the world's most recognized and respected brands. We've been in business for nearly 50 years and quality and reliability have been our foundation from the start."

PlayboySportsBook.com launches in English and will add Chinese, Spanish and Italian.

The site is powered by Ladbrokes eGaming Limited, the world's biggest bookmaker, and is licensed in and operated out of Gibraltar
