Intertops.com Posts Odds on Success of 'Pearl Harbor'; World War II Epic Expected to Blow Up the Box Office

    Updated 10:00 AM ET May 15, 2001
ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Memorial Day weekend audiences are certain to flock to the theatre to see "Pearl Harbor" -- the highly anticipated movie version of one of the most significant moments in American history. Realizing that the World War II epic is likely to be the next Hollywood blockbuster, Intertops.com today became the first established bookmaker to offer betting options on the box office success of the film.
The Internet's first and largest sports betting site, Intertops.com is offering two distinct betting options on the film. Currently, "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" holds the opening weekend box office record draw of $92.73 million, set in 1997. Intertops.com has listed "Pearl Harbor" at 5/6 odds (i.e., win $5 for every $6 bet) to eclipse that mark in its first weekend of release and 5/6 to fall short of that total. Patrons may also wager on a unique over/under line for the film's total domestic gross, $285 million in box office takings at 5/6 odds.

"Two years ago we offered a similar betting option on the opening weekend success of 'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.' The tremendous success we received from those offers -- coupled with the hype surrounding the release of 'Pearl Harbor' -- made this offer a no-brainer," said Simon Noble, executive director and co-founder of Intertops.com. "Whether it's international award events like The Oscars(R), hit reality television series like Survivor, or the opening weekend success of Hollywood blockbusters, Intertops.com will continue to be the sports book to find odds on all things entertainment."

Intertops.com will be offering "Pearl Harbor" betting options through May 25, the film's official opening day. Results will be based on the totals as calculated by ACNielsen EDI; all odds are subject to change. As with any form of Internet gambling, customers must be 18 or over to participate.

Intertops forgot to inform us in their glowing press release, but the MAXIMUM amount you can bet on this offer is $10!!!

Why even bother putting up a number when the most you will let anybody bet is a lousy $10???

i was going to say the Under as everyone knows what happens so they might not go, but then again everyone knew that the Titanic sank....

40 cent spread and 10 max, quit looking after your customers so well.

Maybe they listened. Limit's up to $55, which is their standard for these types of "promotional" wagers.

FWIW, I'm on the Under. The hype surrounding PH isn't anything near the marketing machine of JP. I remember how JP even poked fun of itself by having JP lunchboxes appearing in the movie.

WOW, I am going to join and I am going to bet the maximum. One question to Intertops, what is the best way to send pennies to your place?
