    Wealthy Gambling Figure Still Target

Updated: Thu, Sep 20 6:33 AM EDT

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Landscapers found a large, freshly dug hole in the back yard of gambling figure Ted Binion's lavish Las Vegas home on the day after the third anniversary of his slaying.

"Somebody went on a treasure hunt," said James J. Brown, Binion's longtime friend and estate lawyer.

Binion was known to have a penchant for burying things valuable to him. A former topless dancer and her lover were convicted of killing Binion to steal his buried treasure of more than $5 million in silver.

Brown said landscapers discovered a hole on Tuesday near a playhouse Binion had built for his daughter years ago. During the murder investigation, the estate received an anonymous tip that suggested Binion had buried valuables under the playhouse, Brown said.

But the estate decided against digging up the yard at the time.

Private detective Tom Dillard, who investigated Binion's death for his estate, said it wasn't known if the diggers found anything. Dillard was asked to take photographs of the hole, nearby footprints and a shovel left behind.

"We're going to examine any trace evidence left by the intruders," said Chief Deputy District Attorney David Roger, the lead prosecutor in the case.

Binion's girlfriend, Sandy Murphy, and her lover, Rick Tabish, are each serving more than 20 years in prison for killing the 55-year-old former Horseshoe Club executive
