INTERTOPS.COM ANNOUNCES ODDS ON SUCCESS OF “HARRY POTTER”

“Magical” Opening Will Make Box Office Records Disappear

St. John’s, Antigua (November 8, 2001)—The release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone has become the most anticipated entertainment event of the holiday season. Advanced ticket sales have soared as fans of the books about a boy wizard try to guarantee themselves a seat in crowded theaters. Recognizing that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is certain to be this year’s holiday blockbuster, Intertops.com today became the first established bookmaker to offer wagering option’s on the film’s box office success.

The Internet’s first and largest sports betting site, Intertops.com is offering unique betting options on the first Harry Potter film including odds on the film breaking various box office records. Currently, The Lost World: Jurassic Park holds the three-day opening weekend box office record draw of $72.1 million, set in 1997. Intertops.com has listed Harry Potter as a favorite at 11/25 odds (i.e., win $11 for every $25 bet) to eclipse that mark in its first weekend of release and 7/4 to fall short of that mark.

Customers may also wager on whether Harry Potter will break or tie the record for quickest film to earn $100 million set by The Phantom Menace in its first five days of release at 1/2 odds or that it will fail to match that feat at 3/2. Intertops.com has created a unique over/under line on the film making $30 million on its opening day, which would make it the highest single-day gross for a film in history, at 5/6 odds.

“The release of the first Harry Potter film has conjured up unmatched box office estimates with industry analysts predicting earnings well above $200 million,” said Simon Nobel, CEO and co-founder of Intertops.com. “Since the film is being shipped to an unprecedented number of theaters and comes from a line of bestselling books that have sold over 110 million copies worldwide, Harry Potter is certain to have a magical opening weekend and establish a new standard for future blockbusters.”

Intertops.com has also formed an over/under line of $78.5 million for Harry Potter’s total opening weekend gross, which patrons may wager on at 5/6 odds. In addition, a unique head-to-head match up of blockbuster films has been developed pitting the opening weekend total of Harry Potter versus that of the forthcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Intertops.com will be offering Harry Potter betting options through November 16, the film’s official opening day. Results will be based on the totals as calculated by ACNielsen EDI; all odds are subject to change. As with any form of Internet gambling, customers must be 18 or over to participate.

Great stuff! It'll be interesting to see how Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings do in the box office. I find the head-to-head matchup the most interesting of all... why aren't other books offering odds on such down to earth events?

Given the increase in ticket prices from '97 to present, this sounds like a good bet.

People have been able to purchase tickets over the internet, which make the planning aspect of a trip to the theatres easier for the average family.

One variable for this is the attraction for the adults. What type of crowds will be attending the shows that start at 10:50 pm or later. The Star Wars audience was there for for all times and many of the geeks, er, fans, were there for multiple showings.
