Carib is a top notch book all the way, and has been for many years.

It's been a pleasure to have them on Bettorsworld since day one.

Carib was literally the very first offshore sportsbook to have a website. (Not online betting, but a site).

Their length of time in business speaks volumes.

I think there's no doubt he bet on sports. I think it will be impossible to prove that he bet on hockey though.....

OH? I DISAGREE...IF JAGR MADE NHL BETS VIA THE NET THERE WILL BE A RECORD AT CARIB AND MAYBE WITH JAGR..AND IF HE BET OVER THE PHONE THERE ARE TAPES

AT THIS POINT THE CHANCES ARE 90% OR HIGHER THAT JAGR WILL NEVER PLAY IN THE NHL AGAIN, AS THIS STORY IS BEING WORKED HARD AND IS TO COME OUT SOON, WITH PROOF...AND GUESS WHO IS GONNA GET MAJOR BUCKS FOR TIPPING OFF A TABLOID?

              I don't think so.

From what I understand there really were locks on the account that prohibted wagering on NHL games.

                Carib, Jagr

Carib is still solid as a rock....I have more confidence in them than I do in my local bank.

Apparently the Jagr situation was much ado about nothing. From what I've heard it was some of Jagr's cronies that were actually playing the games and stiffing Carib. My understanding is that when Jagr's financial guy got wind of the situation he dealt with it. I'm enough of a cynic to think that its a case where everyone came up with the best story they could to avert a PR crisis for JJ and the NHL, but I've heard from a number of places that the Jagr account wouldn't allow hockey betting.

If I were Jagr and some of my sycophantic homeboys had me down $500 large at a sportsbook, I'd definitely want to know about it--even if I had JJ's bank.

Jagr hasn't been the same since he cut his mullet anyway....

I don't know. Just betting on sports in general while in the role of a professional athlete really isn't right is it? I don't think athletes should be role models either, but I think the game gets tainted when a player bets on sports, even if it's not the one he plays.

                    pro athletes betting on sports....

Personally, I'd have a hard time judging an athlete harshly for betting on sports. Obviously I don't have a moral problem with it, and no one really has an issue with the other 'legal but not necessarily approved by society' things that pro jocks do--drinking, womanizing, etc.

An athlete betting on a sport he plays obviously raises "conflict of interest" issues, but even so most pro athletes make so much money that it doesn't make financial sense for them to tank a game. For example,a guy like Shaq makes a couple hundred grand per game (or more) for playing basketball. It would be hard to get enough bets down on (or against) the Lakers without anyone noticing the unusual line movement. Even if he could, he then has to influence play in such a way to cash the bet. He could have a "bad night" and his teammates could still play well, causing his team to win (and causing him to lose his bet) or vice versa. And while there are guys who don't make as much money as the big stars, its unlikely they'd be in a position to singlehandedly determine the outcome of a game.

Now I'm not saying that athletes *should* bet on their own sport--I'd agree that its a bad idea to do this, for the bad PR it would generate as much as anything else. I just don't think that athletes have a lot of incentive to bet on their own sport, at least in such a way that would compromise the integrity of the game. Some might make the case that a football player, for example, would have a better understanding of the nuances of the game and make him better able to handicap it and successfully wager on it. The performance of the former NFL players that have gotten into the sports information biz (mostly as paid frontmen) proves otherwise.

The ethical quandry of a player betting on his own sport notwithstanding, I'm personally of the opinion that a pro athlete has a reason not to bet on other sports. Most people wouldn't have a problem with Jagr heading to Las Vegas in the offseason and playing poker or blackjack, or playing the dogs or ponies. I can't really make much of a moral distinction between Jagr betting ponies and betting baseball parlays. Obviously, if a player developed a gambling addiction of some sort that could become a problem--but that's also the case for anyone and no different from the many other addictions that athletes have to deal with. My litmus test would be the same that I'd use for any other professional--if whatever he enjoys doesn't undermine his ability to do his job or hurt others its hard for me to object.

But to paraphrase Dennis Miller "that's just my opinion....I could be wrong" ; )
