By Amit Ben Aroya, Ha'aretz Correspondent
An investigation by the police international crimes unit has revealed that four soccer referees have been involved in fixing 24 local matches in exchange for bribes.
Evidence uncovered by police indicating that five referees currently overseeing matches had taken bribes was passed on to the central region's district attorney, as well as evidence incriminating two other referees.
The police have also submitted evidence against two gambling agents and seven ringleaders of illegal gambling rackets to the state attorney's office.
The findings come as a result of undercover police investigation which has been in action since January 2002. Dozens of suspects, including referees, businessmen and gambling agents, have been questioned during the operation.
