NCAA Players Placing Bets?
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (July 16, 2002 8:19 a.m. EDT) - Former Florida basketball player Teddy Dupay asked another student to place bets for him on Gator basketball games, according to court documents.
Two students told investigators that Dupay asked to have the bets placed for him while he still played for the team, according to documents obtained Monday by Florida Today under the state's open records law.
Two of Dupay's former teammates also told investigators that he had talked about betting on games, the documents show.
Dupay, who was declared ineligible to play last September after he was listed as an uncharged co-defendant in a gambling investigation by school police, denied that he bet on Florida games.
"In a trial, I'd be found innocent and the decision would be in my favor," Dupay told the News-Press of Fort Myers on Monday. "If I could go back, I would definitely come out and say this is ridiculous. I'd take legal action immediately."
Student Joseph Sustaita and his former girlfriend, Jill Stevens, both told university police that Dupay asked Sustaita to place bets for him on Gator games while he played for the team.
Teammates Brent Wright and Brett Nelson both told campus police that they heard Dupay talk about his gambling on sports, according to police reports turned over to the State Attorney's Office.
A third teammate, Udonis Haslem, told police that "he has heard Dupay talk about placing bets and the point spreads when they were in the locker room."
Dupay said the students had been intimidated and tricked by police.
