  • Toledo vs KU

The prospect of a visit to the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Ohio doesn’t exactly strike fear into the hearts of opposing teams.

But more than one of the Toledo Rockets’ opponents have come away shattered in recent years.

It may be surprising to see a MAC team like Toledo favored over a BCS conference team like the Kansas Jayhawks, but the oddsmakers spoke on Monday, opening the Rockets as 5 ½-point home favorites for their game against Kansas on Friday night.

Sharp action quickly responded, dropping the Rockets to 4-point favorites.

“Pinnacle saw sharps all over Kansas at +5 ½, +5 and even +4 ½ and it`s now stabilized slightly at +4,” says a linesman at Pinnaclesports.com.

The Rockets are 32-2 at home over the last six seasons, including a remarkable 20-9 against the spread.

“The Rockets are considered to be a slightly better team, and have been given a little more than the usual adjustment for the home field because of their recent performances at the Glass Bowl,” says Covers Expert David Malinsky. “In fact, for a night game on television, we can expect an even better crowd behind them in this one."

This is the first home game of the year for the Rockets, who lost to another Big 12 North team, the Iowa State Cyclones, in triple overtime in Week 1. Toledo then incredulously fell 31-10 to fellow divisional MAC member Western Michigan as 10 ½-point favorites.

The Jayhawks on the other hand opened 2-0, though the quality of their opponent and the quality of play by Kansas leaves much to be desired. Kansas opened its season with a 49-18 win over Division 1-AA Northwestern State, but only managed to out-gain the Demons by 47 total yards.

They also survived a near upset in Week 2 against Louisiana-Monroe.

“Only beating Louisiana-Monroe by two points, when favored by 25, and losing both first downs and total offense, tells us that it could be a while before the Jayhawks are going to play anywhere near their capacity,” says Malinsky.

The last meeting between these teams was in 2004 in Kansas. They Jayhawks entered the game as just 3-point favorites, but rolled out to a 49-7 first half lead before finishing off the Rockets 63-14.
