Illinois 13-1 vs Michigan 10-3 at Crisler arena
A LOOK AT MICHIGAN
Michigan coach John Beilein (2nd year) has
his team ranked 24th in the nation.
Signifigant wins: UCLA 55-52 (a game UCLA should
not have lost)
DUKE 81-83 (Michigan dominated
this flat duke team, duke shot 7-33 from the arc)
Other wins include, N Carolina Central, E Mich,
Norfolk St, Oakland, Florida Gulf Coast, and a
Overtime win vs the might Savannah State.
Michigan just lost yesterday at home to Wisconsin
73-61 as the Badgers played lights out destroying
the 1-3-1 zone with 42 first half points.
The Wolverines play a strong trapping 1-3-1 zone
amd strong perimeter defense, only wisky has been
able to nail the long ball this year vs Michigan.
Michigan star player Manny Harris is a force to
contend with on offense, he is involved in over
30% of the teams scoring possessions.
(Wisky figured that out and shut him down)
A very good free throw shooting team draining
the free ones at a 78% clip.
The Weakness of Michigan is Rebounding and
inside scoring allowed.
A LOOK AT ILLINOIS
13-1 not ranked, only loss to #20 clemson by 2 points.
The Illini have beaten #25 Missouri and #11 Purdue
and continue to fly under the radar.
Illinois has not trailed at half time in any game this
year.
Coach Weber has put together a very well coached
team, they move the ball with clear crisp passing,
solid movement inside and a great Free Throw
shooting team. Compliment that with a clamp down
defense and you have a solid basketball team.
The Illini are very well balanced in scoring with 4 players
averaging 12.1 ppg.
Illinois shoots the mid range jumper better than
most teams out there, this combined with the
inside play of the bigs will be the answer in beating
michigan. Illinois should dominate inside.
Michigans 1-3-1 trapping zone is very aggressive
and traps well on the corners. If Illinois moves the ball
well they will get some good looks at the basket.
Illinois has had time to prepare for this style of defense.
The Illini need to hit some outside shots, and with the
addition of Alex Lejion this is very achievable. Getting
the ball to the high post and into the paint will
be Illinois goal on offense.
On defense Illinois needs to clamp down on
Manny HARRIS the wolverines leading scorer avg
20 ppg/ Neutralize him and you kill the offensive
threat of Michigan.
A FEW TACK ON THE FLOOR
Michigan rarely turns the ball over a coach
Beilen staple of play. Illinois forces alot of turnovers
with defensive pressure.
Michigan shoots a ton of three point shots, making
34.5%, while Illinois takes away the 3 point attempts
holding teams to 26%.
Carpets Pick
I see this being a rather low scoring defensive
battle which favors Illinois as they play 11 deep
are are just to big inside for Michigan to handle.
Carpets says Illinois 71 Michigan 66
