Based on the picks by the best cappers in the CFB Contest, these are the popular picks:

    UTEP by 3 top cappers
Central Michigan by 2 top cappers

and the following by 1 top capper each
    Texas A&M
    LSU
    UAB
    Stanford
    San Jose
    Georgia
    Auburn
    Minnesota

    Let's see how they do.

I better put the lines in there as some of the games have changed dramatically.

UTEP was -7.5 for the contest and is now -10!

Here were the lines when these cappers made the picks for the contest. See if your book can offer a line close to this. Otherwise, beware.

UTEP -7.5 by 3 top cappers
Central Michigan +13.5 by 2 top cappers

and the following by 1 top capper each
    Texas A&M -14
    LSU -17
    UAB -5.5
    Stanford -16.5
    San Jose +34
    Georgia +5.5
    Auburn -12.5
    Minnesota -6.5

Well, an average start by the top cappers, who went 5-5 for Week 0 in the NCAA contest.

3 top cappers and a couple of others chose UTEP, perhaps because it was the line that moved most. UTEP was -7.5 in the contest line and it moved to -10 by game day. Another reason why some contestants prefer a late deadline. They like to choose the line that has moved the most in their favor from the opening lines posted for the contest.

Sometimes that provides value, but sometimes it can influence a bad pick. Sometimes the line is moved by sharp, smart money and sometimes it is moved by squares. Proceed with caution.

I realyl think we should have an earlier deadline to get the best use of this contest, and to help make some 'real' cash.

Its hard for most to get back in the forum before the games on saturday--I know its not going to change this year, but it would be nice to make picks be in on Friday, so we can see who the top guys are on and play accordingly if we wish.

Contests are fun in all, but the objective for most is to beat the book, and with all the sharp guys we have in here, we shoudl be able to make some cash if we go at it the right way.

        Just my opinion on it.

I just did a survey of the line movement for Week 0 of the CFB season.

If you would have bet with the line movement you would have gone 12-14.

I would love to see how this trends for a longer period.

          Anyone know?

I seem to remember that it is nothing special - 50/50 whether you go with it or against it.

Moving the deadline up to Fri would cause a LOT of guys to start bitching. A lot of guys use sport services, and most dont release their pics until game day.

That's lame in my opinion, but I suspected that's why some wanted the late deadline. If you can't make your own picks, you shouldn't be entering capper contests.....IMHO.

Or.... maybe some people look for late line movement, late line differentials between certain books or pair a certain bookmaker against another bookmaker. Things like that, you really can't do on thursday or friday for saturday/sunday games. Maybe some people are looking for injury information or just late information for that matter.

There are different ways to handicap games. Some use stats and trends which is fine... others go about it in different ways. Not saying which way is correct, but remember... these sportsbooks have the same stats and trends that the bettor has and they factor that in when they make the lines.
