Leroy's takes nickels on side, 2 dollars on totals. The Stratosphere quickly went into the toilet, hardly takes anything, and is not on any sports screen. Coast Properties are the same. Hilton and Excalibur take 2 dimes on sides and a nickel on totals, and that is the max you'll find at Vegas phone accounts. When Scott ran the Dust in the 80s, they took 5 dimes on sides, which if you take inflation into account, is now the equivalent of 10 + dimes.

Fpr those of you new to Bettorsworld, check out the archives. Last baseball season I wrote a series of posts called "Las Vegas is Not Disneyland," wherein I described the demise of sportsbetting in the town.

      Sergius,
You r right, of course there s no phone betting at the MGM. That was the point I was trying to make with D/Style. His raves of the MGM would want to make somebdy drop what they normally do, battle hoards of tourists and traffic and just play there on the blind.

      Reno--great articles!!

OLD MAN--Just came back from seeing the Righteous Bros. They are OLD MEN.

Two questions for you guys in the know: 1) Can Scotty tell us, at least in vague terms, what the Stardust wanted him to do that caused him to quit? I know Scotty had put the Stardust on top of the heap in those days. 2) Is Leroy's still running the hole-in-the-wall sports book downtown where they had the computer equipment upstairs to run the state-wide operation? There used to be some real characters at that place. Most seemed to have chosen drinking over gambling after money got real tight for them.

Thanks Big Money and Reno for your comments.

As far as the MGM goes, yes it's true they don't have phone accounts. But if they did have them then perhaps they wouldn't offer as appetizing a menu as they do now.

I've had a phone account at Treasure Island for 3 years. Everything is computerized with bets placed by pressing the numbers on the phone. They call it TELE-BET. Never once was my balance off even a $1. I keep about 5 dimes in the account, but couldn't tell you what the limits are. I use it for smaller plays or if I'm just too lazy to go out of the house.
I havn't talked to a "live" person in the 3 years. Very easy withdraw and deposit procedure in the book. Opened one up for my wife and we can deposit into each others, but the name on the account must be the one to withdraw. They had an 800# up until a year ago, which I miss if on a little getaway for the weekend. Now it's a local number with caller id that will not accept the call if out of state and I believe a few select Nevada counties.
I also like the fact that if my fingers move fast enough, I can get down in less than 30 secs. On occasion, a line will change while you are placing the bet, and it will tell you this and you have the option of betting it or not. The first couple of times this happened, the lines moved against me and I began to wonder. But many times now, I,ve gotten a better number.

                Sports777,
Up until 3yrs ago the place you mentioned(Mirage prop.) had one of the best "live" phone betting operations in LV. Minimum 5 Dime deposit, high limits side & totals. Gaming Comm. heat and scrutiny made them reconsider and drop the service. Around the same time, Stations packed it in also(live phones).
If you r happy with the scaled down TeleBet great.

The Mirage telebet system is an embarrasment. On sides you can only risk $1,000 to win whatever. If you bet Pedro Martinez at, say, -400, then you can only win $250. However if you like the dog at,sa y + 320, you can risk $1,000 to win $3200. What a joke.

DeacDoug...I cant take credit for putting the Stardust on top. Lefty Rosenthal had the vision to build the Stardust Race/Sportsbook. He could see the big picture and all I did was take over. Its like we saw the same bigger picture and I just kept it going. I was fortunate to have complete control from Management. They told me to do what I had to do and then kept out of the way and let me do my job. The book figures were out of sight under my watch. Not
%wise but bottom line wise. But what is not publicised is the effect the sportsbook had on the whole property. Eventually my juice ran out. I outlasted 6 GM's but it ran its course. The newest Casino Mgr was a Sams Town type(Sams Town owns the Dust) and wanted a higher % in the book. He took the phones out. He wanted to chase winners & focus on parlays and parlay cards. My juice was gone, I couldnt stop him and I was miserable. I thought 'how much would I work for to let them make me mserable'. They dont have that much. I quit my high paying job and have no regrets. Thats a generic overview DeacDoug but you get the idea.
Their is much more and it ties into the sad state of the Vegas sports betting scene and into the current battle that has taken over the Bettors World forum. Thats for another time DeacDoug...Scotty

I moved to Vegas 3 1/2 years ago with little or no bankroll. Still working my way up to being a big punter. Tele-Bet suits my needs for 50-65% of my basketball and baseball bets. My unit size drops from football with the everyday action and looking at it on a weekly basis.
RENO, I wouldn't bet GOD at -$4.00. But the way Walker jacks the favorites it's a great dog house. That's the value of tele-bet to me.
I've only had a computer since Christmas so I'm just starting to test the off-shore waters. Kinda waiting to see where the dust clears with this betting ban crap.
