Having been the first site on the net many years ago to accept advertising from sportsbooks and to hold contests, I feel the need to respond to wizards comments as there are two sides to every story.
Once upon a time, sportsbooks would put up prize money with no stipulations attached. However, once upon a time there were only a handful of sportsbooks. (I remember when there were 3 and only two had online software)
These days, there are tons of books. Yes, books sponsor contests for the exposure, with the main reason being to get some new customers.....
The reason for the rollovers, which may seem excessive at times, can be traced directly to some past winners of these contests. Namely, the ones who would win their prize via an account at the book, and simply withdraw immediately. The book wasted it's time here, as they had no shot at a new customer. Which is the bottom line.
Contests are fun. We'd assume that anyone coming to a site like this, not only enjoys betting on sports, but also uses, or is thinking about using, an offshore sportsbook. This is a way for the sportsbookto introduce their services to new players.
Many of these prizes are basically 50 to 100% bonuses. What's better than that?
There are many ways for those with more than one account to easily satisfy the rollover requirements....
Scalp your way out for example.
Everyone has to benefit or there would be no contests.
1) The books get potential new customers
2) A site like this hopes to attract new visitors and hopefully some visitors who do more than just post in contest threads.
3) The players get a shot at some extra cash in a situation where, we all assume they are going to be posting up with a book and betting anyways....
Having said that, let me also make clear that not all contests run here on this site fit into the sportsbook/rollover scenario.
Take for example this march madness contest. This was a NO STIPULATION, NO STRINGS ATTACHED contest where you can take your prize and do what you want with it.
If we see a good response from contests like this,(such as the participants sticking around for a bit and maybe even posting some picks and opinions) then we'll do many more like it..........
Cheers!
