The Vikings should have retaliated. Like a baseball pitcher would. Or a hockey team. You don't let your QB take those cheap shots again and again. Hit Brees hard, even if it is late. Take the 15 yard penalty. That's the only way to stop the Saints from taking out Favre. The Saints were willing to take the penalties and it worked.
One of Brett's offensive linemen should have decked any guy who decked Brett late. Deck him late, whatever. Let them know there will be retaliation. It's the only way to prevent what happened.
The Saints planned to do this. Not just hit him, but hit him late and hard. They did it to Warner the week before. There may not have been a bounty but it was the plan and you know the coaches instructed them that way.
I'm not being wimpy about protecting the QBs. The guy is stationary and a 300 lb guy is coming at him full steam. It's not a fair fight. A running back is stronger and has some momentum and power to avoid taking the full force of the blow. But no QB can stand up to it if a guy really wants to take him out.
Any team that wants to take out an NFL QB can do it. They don't do it during the regular season. Kind of a code of the road. But with the Super Bowl at stake the Saints clearly have targeted the other team's QB.
The NFL has to protect the QBs or all fans would have to get used to watching 2nd and 3rd stringers try to lead their team. The NFL has to protect the quality of their product.
If I were Childress, I would have told my D lineman to deck Brees, even late.
