 2013 Colorado

College Football

Preview

Schedule and Odds

Colorado only had one win last year for a reason. Their offense was really bad and their defense was even worse. Losses to start the season against Colorado State and Sacramento State weren’t a good sign of what was to come. To try and turn things around, they brought in head coach Mike MacIntyre who’s coming over from San Jose State.

It will help that they’ll have 17 total starters returning, but that doesn’t include the quarterback position. Connor Wood is set to be the starter who saw limited time last year on his way to just one touchdown and four interceptions. The good news is that his receiving corps will be a lot better this year as long as they can stay healthy. MacIntyre has installed a new pistol formation and more up-tempo attack that should see more points on the board for the Buffaloes. Paul Richardson and Jeff Thomas are set to have solid seasons as receivers. The running game should also be more successful with the entire offensive line returning. Christian Powell is still only a sophomore and showed great signs last year of what he could do.

The defense is a bigger question as they gave up 46 points per game last year. That will have to change because even if the offense does improve, they won’t be scoring 50 per game. A couple seniors will have to lead the way in Chidera Uzo-Diribe at end and Derrick Webb at linebacker. The secondary also returns everyone from a year ago so at least they’ll already have the experience of getting gashed. A new defensive scheme led by Kent Baer should be able to help this unit.

2013 Colorado College Football Schedule

Sept. 1 vs. Colorado State (Denver)
Sept. 7 vs. Central Arkansas
Sept. 14 vs. Fresno State
Sept. 28 at Oregon State
Oct. 5 vs. Oregon
Oct. 12 at Arizona State
Oct. 26 vs. Arizona
Nov. 2 at UCLA
Nov. 9 at Washington
Nov. 16 vs. California
Nov. 23 vs. USC
Nov. 30 at Utah

With a new focus and new coaches, Colorado should be able to open the season with a couple wins if all goes well. In-state rival Colorado State will once again be a tough task, but their next game will need to be a win. Central Arkansas is a good team…  in the FCS. In their final non-conference game, it’s going to take a lot to upend Fresno State who beat them by 55 points last year.

Unfortunately the Buffaloes have a tough schedule the rest of the way and won’t get much love playing Pac-12 opponents. Four of their first six games in conference play are on the road and the schools they face at home are Oregon and Arizona.

The Buffs will probably get their first chance at a conference win in November when they get California at home. At that point, their offense should be somewhat respectable as well their defense somewhat improved. A road game at Utah finishes out their season which could be a battle to be the worst team in the Pac-12.
