In 2012, Georgia finally put together the type of season many thought possible for them and reaffirmed faith back into head coach Mark Richt. The only problem for them was that while they did finish 12-2, the Bulldogs only made it to the Capital One Bowl after losing to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. This was a team primed to knock down Alabama from the top rankings, yet when it mattered most, they were unable to put away the Crimson Tide. Without an over-the-top 2013 recruiting class, fans will hope quarterback Aaron Murray can bring home the National Title in his final collegiate season.
Georgia is currently listed at odds of 20 to 1 to win the National Championship at 5 Dimes Sportsbook. 5 Dimes also has odds posted for the Bulldogs 1st Game which is against Clemson at the end of August. Georgia is a +1 point early underdog in that Game.

The Bulldogs are returning Murray, running back Todd Gurley and eight other offensive starters from their 2012 squad that was only a few plays away from going to the National Championship Game. The question for them will be on the defensive end. They’ll be without Jarvis Jones who led the nation in sacks. That’s not all as Georgia will only have three returning starters from last year’s team. A positive for the Bulldogs on the defensive side is that coordinator Todd Grantham will be staying with the team even after interest coming in from the NFL.
Unfortunately for Georgia, the start of the season couldn’t be much harder. They have to travel to Clemson to face one of the best offenses in the nation once again that’s led by Tajh Boyd and receiver Sammy Watkins. The only good thing coming into this Game is that Clemson’s defense is always mediocre and they probably will be once again even with some top recruits coming in.
Next up, their home opener will be against South Carolina, a team that destroyed them last year 35-7. Revenge will be on the minds for the Bulldogs, but it won’t come easy going against Jadeveon Clowney who could become a Heisman candidate if all goes well for the Gamecocks.
With their first two Games coming against possible Top 10 teams, Georgia will have to be on their Game from the start. However, no Game this year will be out of reach for the Bulldogs with Murray and Gurley in the backfield.
Their next SEC matchup will come two weeks after their meeting with the Gamecocks and it doesn’t get any easier for them as they’ll have to face Les Miles and LSU. The bonus for this matchup is that LSU lost 10 upperclassmen to the NFL draft and aren’t expected to be the same Top 10 team that they have been in year’s past. But remember, this is still LSU we’re talking about and they have loads of talent.
Georgia will hope to escape their first Four Games with only one loss and any worse will be a disappointment and anything better will have fans thinking BCS Championship. If all goes well, the Bulldogs should be entering their Game at Florida with at least a 6-1 record. The Bulldogs beat the Gators in a feisty battle last year 17-9 to make it two straight, but winning three in a row will be tough.
Florida’s class was ranked No. 2 nationally, but they also lost their defensive coordinator to the NFL. If the Gators offense actually shows they can move the ball at the beginning of the year, this could end up being Georgia’s toughest task of the season. That Game could also easily decide the winners of the SEC East, although South Carolina could sneak in.
After Florida, Georgia should be able to win out. Obviously, the Bulldogs will want to come out playing well from the start and beat Clemson and South Carolina, but that’s a tall order. If they can do that, this could end up being a better year than 2012, and if not, expect a similar two-loss record and possible Capital One Bowl appearance again.
