2013 New York Jets

NFL Preview

Betting Predictions

After making it to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010, the New York Jets are coming off a pair of consecutive disappointing seasons. Last year, the Jets got off to a decent 3-3 start and were 4-2 against the spread in those six games. However, the wheels quickly came off as they dropped seven of their final 10 games to finish 6-10 overall, tied for last place in the AFC East. They also hurt their backers during this stretch in going 3-7 ATS.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez struggled last season, throwing for just 2,883 yards with more interceptions (18) than touchdowns (13). Second-year wide receiver Jeremy Kerley was a pleasant surprise for the Jets, recording 56 receptions for 827 yards to lead the team in both categories. Running back Shonn Greene was New York's biggest asset on offense, as he was a 1,000-yard rusher for the second consecutive season and totaled 1,214 yards overall and eight TDs. The team's anemic offense was its biggest downfall, ranking 30th in the league in both total yards and passing yards and 28th in points scored, averaging just 17.6 points per game.

Many NFL betting experts thought head coach Rex Ryan would lose his job after his team underachieved two years in a row. While Ryan was retained, Jets owner Woody Johnson did fire general manager Mike Tannenbaum. John Idzik was brought in as Tannenbaum's replacement, and former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will call plays after Tony Sparano was fired. Ryan will call the defensive plays after defensive coordinator Mike Pettine was also let go. New York lost some valuable players in the offseason as well, including Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis, who inked a six-year, $96 million deal with the Buccaneers after he was traded to Tampa Bay. Greene decided to team up with RB Chris Johnson and sign with the Tennessee Titans, one of many free agents to move on along with tight end Dustin Keller, offensive guards Brandon Moore and Matt Slauson and safety LaRon Landry. The Jets hope to replace some of those key players through the NFL draft, with Alabama CB Dee Milliner, Missouri DT Sheldon Richardson and West Virginia QB Geno Smith among the standouts who could contribute right away.

The oddsmakers at 5Dimes have the Jets set at O/U 6.5 wins for the upcoming season. The Jets did draft some nice pieces for the future, but the offense will likely still struggle to score points. Ryan's defense will also be lucky to help New York win as many games as last season.
