2013 BCS Odds
LSU didn’t exactly finish the 2012 season how they wanted to after going into the year ranked No. 3 in the AP Polls. They faltered on the biggest stages, losing to Florida and at home to Alabama. Without much motivation in their Chick-fil-A bowl Game, they lost to Clemson by a point. While their defense was one of the best in the nation, it was their offense that let them down in the big Games. They only managed six points against Florida, 12 points in a win at Auburn and regularly hung around the 20-point mark in SEC Games. With another year under his belt, quarterback Zach Mettenberger will need to improve for this team to become nationally relevant again. Their dominant defense from past years will need some help as they are only returning three starters.
LSU is listed at odds of +1650 to win the BCS Title which is a little more than 16 to 1. Those odds are courtesy of 5 Dimes Sportsbook.

The Tigers have some holes on the offensive line as that’s where the majority of their departures were, but that isn’t a problem that can’t be fixed, especially in Baton Rouge. Whereas Mettenberger has to pick up his Game, LSU will have a viable rushing attack led by Jeremy Hill which should once again be able to help them churn out wins. Much like the offensive line, the defensive line will be new, but getting guys to fill those spots has never really been a problem. They’ll be returning just three defensive starters which will hurt, but this is still a defense that can carry the team in a lot of their Games.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, their Schedule doesn’t help much either. Right from the start, LSU will get a major test from a similarly defensive powerhouse at TCU. The Horned Frogs will be returning most of their key players from last year’s squad that was somewhat successful in their first Big 12 campaign. Their defense along with a more experienced Trevone Boykin at QB will give LSU a real test.
Bigger challenges await LSU as they’ll have to travel to Georgia in their fifth Game. It will be a telling Game for the rest of their season because Mettenberger will most likely have to put points on the board for LSU to come away with a win. Georgia is a solid team on both sides of the ball and can Scoreon anyone. After that, a home Game against Florida sits between two road Games at Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
To make matters worse, the Tigers have to play on the road at Alabama this year. The only positive for this Game is that they have a bye the week before and after which can only help. LSU will then finish the season with two home Games, but have to deal with Johnny Manziel and a Texas A&M team that could have BCS hopes coming into it.
If the Tigers come away from this season with three losses once again, it would actually be good for them considering their Schedule. However, if Mettenberger can’t take his Game up a notch, more than three losses is a real possibility.
