Preview and Odds
Nebraska is alongside the two Michigan schools in fighting for the Legends Division out of the Big Ten. At this point, it's a three-way tie between the schools and most oddsmakers actually agree on that. The Cornhuskers had yet another solid, respectable season, but weren't really recognized on a national level. In their four losses, they gave up a ridiculous 53.5 points per game. In any game they lose this year, their defense again will likely be the culprit. That unit will return four starters which means a lot of freshman will be given the go on the first day of the season which is both good and bad considering how they played last year.
Nebraska is listed at odds of 60 to 1 at sportsbook.ag to win the BCS Title.
As for the other side of the ball, they will be getting back eight starters including their top players at all skill positions. Nebraska is going to have one of the best offenses in the country yet again which kept them in many games last year. Four-year starter Taylor Martinez leads the pack and continues to improve, especially in the passing game. The combo of Martinez and Ameer Abdullah should be able to wreak havoc rushing through defenses, but the difference is going to be Martinez's arm. He had 10 more passing TDs last year than the previous season while having the best completion percentage of his college career. Top receiver Kenny Bell (eight TDs) will be back to lead the receiving corps. As for the players lost on the offensive end, gone are two tight ends and their center. No matter, this offense is geared to be even better in 2013.
2013 Nebraska Cornhuskers College Football Schedule
Aug. 31 vs. Wyoming
Sept. 7 vs. Southern Miss
Sept. 14 vs. UCLA
Sept. 21 vs. South Dakota State
Oct. 5 vs. Illinois
Oct. 12 at Purdue
Oct. 26 at Minnesota
Nov. 2 vs. Northwestern
Nov. 9 at Michigan
Nov. 16 vs. Michigan State
Nov. 23 at Penn State
Nov. 29 vs. Iowa
A big positive for the Cornhuskers is that they will be starting the season with five straight home games. They've lost one game at home in the past two years if that says anything about how effective they are in Lincoln. Much like Michigan State, Nebraska also has a very favorable conference schedule. Instead of playing the powers of Ohio State and Wisconsin, they'll get early games against Illinois and Purdue which should help them in their quest for a second straight Legends title.
In addition to that, Nebraska will get to play Northwestern, Michigan State and Iowa all at home. As stated previously, they rarely lose at home. Their biggest games of the season will come on the road at Michigan and Penn State. They beat both teams last year, but winning on the road is going to take something more against those schools.
If their defense can show any signs of life this year, the Cornhuskers have a chance to be very good as their offense can score on any defense they'll be playing.
